Yeah, I saw these too. The thing that interested me is that they are listed as "Nippon OEM". That is different than the filters which we can get here from US dealers. For those of us who did our first oil change ourselves, we (or at least I) noticed an interesting thing. The filter that was on the car stock from the factory was not the same filter that the dealer sold me to put on the car. It was a completely different animal that was slightly bigger, looked as if it had a different filter media, or at least a different assembly method, and it had a different part number. I was wondering if the filter that we are looking at from Atkins is the US standard, or if it is the filter that came on the car, or if it is a third variant.

However, I think that the only way to find out will be to contact Atkins and ask them directly. Interesting question though.

The "different/bigger filter when new" thing has been true for past rotary cars, too. I am not exactly sure of the details, but I speculate that a larger filter is specified for new engines since the engine will produce more stuff to catch in the filter during the initial break-in than it will after the break-in.

I hear your theory, and it is definitely a possible correct answer however, you and are both just blue sky guessing here so . . . I am just wondering if maybe this is what the Japanese get all the time, and it is actually a better filter. I mean that would be dead interesting. Filters often vary from continent to continent since the cost of importing them is prohibitive and silly in most cases since good filters can be found manufactured all over the world. I just fall into the camp that that little tiny filter in my engine just feels too small. Wow, how's that for baseless logic? This filter thing has been kind of bugging me since I pulled that original filter off. I think that I need better things to think about. Have a good one. - H
