Syncro question
 

Quick question...

How hard are our syncros intended to be run?

For example, If Im going 45 in 4th gear, and am about to have to make a turn, does it hurt the syncro if I go ahead and shift to 2nd (without taking my foot off the clutch) before the car has decelerated much?... Obviously I hear the syncro rev up a lot harder if I go ahead and put the shifter in 2nd when the car is still going 40 than I do if it is slowed down to 25, but I'm not sure if that is just it doing its job or if it is being overworked.

And this question is only involving what to do while the clutch is still in. I know not to let off the clutch without getting the rpms matched up.

I have just noticed that my turns seem a lot smoother if I go ahead and get the shifter in the lower gear a little ways before I actually have to make the turn. That way about halfway through the turn I can just match the rpms and ease off the clutch without having to worry about the actual shifting. But obviously slightly smoother turns aren't worth a bad syncro...

Find a good book on driving technique...and it will help you figure out a couple of things you are doing wrong :)

If the clutch is in...there shouldn't be a lot of problems putting it in any gear...syncros only try and synchronize going into gear..they could care less what you do with the clutch in

wise man say, clutch is basic. rev matching is good. powershifting up or down, stupid or expensive, but really both.

Ok hold on... does that mean that since the clutch is still in, the whirring noise that I hear from around the gearbox when I move the shifter down to 2nd isn't the syncro starting to spin stuff? Cause if the syncro doesn't make any noise while the clutch is still in then it sounds like I might have a different problem.



Ha, yeah a good book might not be a bad idea...

If the transmission is making gear grinding noises when the clutch is in you have a problem with the clutch not disengaging properly...

It's not the synchro you're hearing, it's the bearings

Yeah I just got off the phone with the dealer a little while ago and they said it was just a bearing and that it wasn't a problem... Said that if anything all I should do is have it serviced and get them to put in synthetic transmission oil. But that it shouldn't be a problem at all.... Since I just got the car used not too long ago I was planning on getting the transmission and diff fluid changed soon anyway.

heh 1- dont call the dealer with those sorts of questions heh better off stickin wit the forums...
2- rev matching is good, and if anythin, overshoot on the RPMS.
3- does anyone know, with our modern transmission, if double-clutching is of any benefit? I think the answer is no, but I'm learning myself...
