Switch to 10w40 and hardly any oil consumption

Im justing wondering if switching from 5w30 to 10w40 and pre-mix would cause a dramatic change in oil consumption?

I used to have to add oil with 5w30 around every other fill up, and now hardly any.

Input?

fahrfegneugen 06-16-2008 11:41 PM

Just drive it hard, the OMP should still meter the same.

nycgps 06-16-2008 11:41 PM

U used to add 5w30 every other fill up ?

Unless u drive ur car really hard or very long distance., I consider *that* to be a problem.

Razz1 06-16-2008 11:46 PM

I wouldn't worry.

nycgps 06-16-2008 11:52 PM

ur car does not know what kind of oil you use, plus there is NO WAY the car can tell if u have premix in ur gas or not. remember its just a machine.

Just wait, u probably overfilled ur oil a bit, its gonna take a while b4 it comes back down.

fahrfegneugen 06-16-2008 11:53 PM

^It would just end up in the intake... jk :)

I dont think the viscosity would be too different that it would flow through the pump differently...

1. How hard do you drive your car?

2. How long since you've started using 10w-40 and not been adding any oil?

Vasichko 06-17-2008 08:08 AM

Ok just to clarify I wasnt adding a quart every other fill up. I was just adding a little here and there to make sure that it was just below to full line.

I would say I redline once a day, but usually driving around in traffic, town, etc, very mild as of late.

Its been almost 2 weeks since Ive had to add any oil.

Ding ding ding. There's you answer. You won't use much oil with "mild" driving. It's the high revs that suck the oil down. I've been using 10w40 since January and have seen the same oil consumption as before with 5w20. When I set the cruise control for a tank I almost don't use any oil at all. When I blast around shifting on the buzzer and hold the revs up high, a lot more oil is used.

I would only be concerned if it didn't use oil under heavy throttle for a whole tank of gas. You are probably fine. :icon_tup:

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to go drive your 8 as hard as you can for 220 miles and report back. Higher RPMs, engine coolant temp, and the amount of intake air all increase the amount of oil injected into the combustion chamber by the OMP.

Vasichko 06-17-2008 10:25 AM

Ill try this weekend.

Ive been doing alot of driving for work. Trying to save as much gas as possible and use cruise control as much as possible.

correct me if i'm wrong...

one of the three vacuum tubes on the intake tube is routed to the omp sender. oil injection levels are based TPS, vacuum, rpms and maybe a few others...

so just opening the throttle up more in general will create a higher demand for more oil... due to more vacuum

heyarnold69 06-18-2008 06:31 AM

i add so little oil to mine... and i use 5w20 ..... who knows...

G-ReX 06-18-2008 06:36 AM

Interesting that I changed to 10w-40 for an HPDE this past weekend. Ate a tank and a half on the track plus 400 miles on the highway plus some around town (about 600 miles total) and not a perceptible drop in oil level. I didn't expect much, but at least a little. I never burned much before - about half a quart every 1000 miles. I'll be back to 5w-30 this week and see how it goes.

Vasichko 06-18-2008 05:30 PM

Yeah I just switched to 10w40 but Im in Dallas and its already hot.

Im wondering if I should switch to 10w30 again???

fahrfegneugen 06-18-2008 08:43 PM

^nothing wrong with 10w 40 grade

Vasichko 06-18-2008 09:39 PM

^
Cool Ill stay where Im at then.

fahrfegneugen 06-19-2008 12:23 AM
