99% sure there is no cat, just a resonated midpipe. The exhaust has an aftermarket header and is a full exhaust back. Why get ride if the intake? And what is the 20 brake pump I keep hearing about?

200.mph 05-21-2018 11:43 PM

intake is garbage (i had one) and takes in hot air from the engine bay and can cause idle issues. key on hit the brake pedal 20+ times really fast, when dont right the oil needle on the gauge cluster will sweep from side to side. it resets the ess iirc which you should also clean. please go read the new owners threads to understand your car better

allerellie100 05-21-2018 11:46 PM

Alright I’m going to try this tomorrow Morning will let you know how it goes. Thanks!

I would suggest disconnecting your exhaust at the header and letting it hang, then run your car and see if there is any change. it's only 3, 14mm nuts and easy to get to. This would rule out any type of clog in the exhaust.

For the intake, the most cost effective thing to do is grabbing an OEM intake system from a junkyard. There are only 2 aftermarket intakes that are known to make (a tiny amount of) extra power, and K&N is not one of them. And K&N filter oil can irreversibly damage your MAF.

The Eccentric Shaft Sensor(ESS) is a magnetic sensor that's beside your main crank pulley. It looks like a little cylinder. Since it's magnetic, it can pick up some metallic bits and throw off the reading. The earlier 8s are especially prone to this since the cylinders are more exposed. The later 8s have a shield around the sensor.

Alright guys so its been a while... I know lol I changed my MAF sensor today... no difference! but I checked that off the list of problems it could be. I’m really leaning toward the o2 sensor being bad as it’s getting worse so fingers crossed. I really don’t think it’s compression but I’m going to do a compression test on it tomorrow as well just to make sure. I will keep you guys informed!

Usually, MAFs don't go bad. Did you actually have K&N oil on it?

Don't throw parts at it. Try the cheap, free stuff first. Did you clean the ESS and perform the 20-brake-stomp? This is free.

Another thing that I noticed when I was reading the previous posts: when you said "oil in your gas", you meant 2-stroke oil, correct? 4-stroke oil in gas is a good way to destroy your fuel injectors.

allerellie100 05-30-2018 11:26 PM

Yes correct, 2 stroke oil. I had a code go off saying my MAF was bad after cleaning it so I went ahead and replaced it. It didn’t change anything but I do have a spare now so that’s nice and I’m just trying to cancel out what could be causing issue. I’m going to clean my ESS sensor tomorrow first thing before I check my compression.

Now i will explain in depth how the car is running. So it idles around 1k pretty good but sounds cam’d over. When driving it, if you are smooth on the gas it acts fine... but if you get on the gas aggressive in anyway it acts as if it’s flooding out. Bogging kinda? Very strange exhaust note, almost like I’m driving a v6. Throttle response is there but not great. I noticed when driving to my grandpas house today (he has a car lift) when cruise was set it was kinda pulsing up and down a bit.

I hope this helps explain the symptoms a bit more. Thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it! I race ATVMX Nationals so when it comes to race quads and dirt bikes I know them like the back of my hand but man this rotary is a very different beast! What a learning curve!! Lol

I hope I'm wrong but when I had problems with my cruise control not staying on the set points it was the first sign my compression was bad. Good luck tomorrow.

BHR ignition

I've had a BHR ignition for about 7 years, recently it started misfiring, hard to start etc, Charles at BHR really looked after me, even though the product was well out of warranty. Top marks to them. I would not hesitate to reccomend them to any who intend to keep their RX8s
Cheers from Australia, Shane Fullston

im new to the 8club

so ive been working on this 8 for a week now replaced coils, plugs, leads, stomp reset, changed oil but i have to change again cause didnt know about using conventional instead of synthetic but fixed a certain misfire by doing the reset but now it misfires when it shifts and it shifts kinda hard.. it flashes doesnt stay on (at least not yet) just wondering if anyone has had this problem and how did you fix it

You don't have to change your oil if you used synthetic.
It's not critical.
If you're still having misfires you could have installed the wires or plugs wrong, or not connected them securely.
Get your OBD scanned, a misfire should pop a code.
If you have a catalytic converter, get it inspected.

HuntrNL 11-03-2021 05:00 PM

i look at the code it cylinder 2 misfire but since i did the reset its just random but it only misfires when i shifts up a gear 2nd and 3rd

fruitspunch 12-07-2021 12:43 PM

After doing steps #1-3, my misfire eventually went away, but took about 200 miles to do so. Is this the ecu just recalibrating the timing?

Hi Guys. I'm a total newbie here so sorry if I got something wrong with this post. Got a 40th Anniversary RX8 which is having misfire probs so I read everything here. I've changed plugs, coils and leads, cleaned the MAF Sensor, tried to clean the ESS (unplugged and unbolted it but it's totally enclosed in metal and, despite it moving freely in both directions, it won't come out). Today, I thought I'd check again that all connections were correct and found this rogue socket when I was putting stuff back together. I'm 100% sure I didn't unplug it so does anyone know where it's supposed to go??
