So can somebody tell me what this part is?

Tonight, while removing the cover in the engine bay that is closest to the front bumper on the passenger side, I pulled the part highlighted by the yellow arrow off. I'd like to know what it is. I'd also like to make sure that it is supposed to seperate the way I pulled it off. It's connected some line back to the cover I was taking off and that's how I disconnected it. It seems like it's a square piece with a central circular connector. It also seemed to go right back on. But I'd kind of like to know what I may have done. So any help would be apprecaite it.

By the way, is the piece with the N3H6 on it the ECU?

Thanks in advance.

Baro Pressure Sensor. Measures Barometric pressure as a trim for the engine management.

Frank (flyboyindy) , you been talking with my wife? :D Hey i'm learning important things here. Like how to stay awake between coats posting on the site ... And how the emblem in the engine cover comes off. See pic. Hopefully most of the engine bay painting will be done tonight so you can sleep well.

Dave,

Thanks you. Any idea if it seperates the way I described above by design? Any idea if I'll get a CEL fault if I broke this device? Just trying to figure out if I broke anything.

Thanks in advance for your help

Bill... Is that primer or the final color? I assume you are going with blue? When do I get to see this thing! =)

ranger4277 12-19-2003 10:19 PM

What are your plans for your engine bay and what paints are you using? (or any other useful info..) I just love engine bays that are cleaner than most dinner plates. :)

Frank,

It's a primer, but it's really a silver annodized look. After i had the three remaining covers painted in this I stopped and thought about leaving them. But I think blue is the way to go. So hopefully by tomorrow morning, assuming my Baro Pressure Sensor allows it, I'll be driving around with a mostly blue engine bay. But I'll have to find some silver touch up that i can use on the lettering. Just couldn't get a good "seal" for masking with masking, scotch or packing tape. But that should finish off the painting for the engine bay... now the interior ...

I'm sure we'll hook up sometime soon. Would like to be in a group of "8"'s.

The baro on most Mz's also works as a map sensor.

ranger4277,

Sorry about that. Must have just missed your post and then went out to put on final coat. No secret on my part. The stuff I'm using (Duplicolor - Metalcast) is right here.

markppm,

I have to admitt that I don't know what that means. Sorry.

flyboyindy 12-19-2003 11:33 PM

Hey Bill,
Did you use that Metalcast paint on your calipers? I bet that red color would look good on my my red 8's calipers =) Did you prime the calipers with anything special?

Frank,

Nope. I used this stuff for the calipers. Someone else had posted it here. I just took advantage of the day when the snow tires were being rebalanced. I'm not as impressed as I thought I would be with them after finishing the first two. But after posting some pics with them in it, I think it was worth the effort, but I don't know I'd do it again.

If the Baro is open the the atmo, then how could it be a MAP sensor?

A MAP sensor needs to be sealed to the manifold to get a correct reading.

Hymee.

im pretty sure it has to do with DSC or the CAN computer system. The idiot at a shop I went to installed some lights and decided to unplug that... dumbass! CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND ALL SORTS OF SHIT went off. Car running in "LIMP MODE" (slow mode etc.) as a pre-cautionary function. Luckily I checked it out and plugged it back together and reset the DSC module doing the procedure and everyone was back to normal.

DO NOT UNPLUG IT!

Hymee 12-20-2003 07:12 AM

I would say that the computer can detect just about anything that gets unplugged.

Luckily when things are resolved it goes normal - as a post-cautionary function. Hehehe

Cheers,
Hymee.

WHealy, your pics got me looking at my engine covers. So I have a question as you seem to be the man in the know! On the underside of the cover mine has embossed "CVR-SURGE-TANK".

Any idea at all what that means?

And second, did you use the anodized look paint on that plastic. The link says it is for metal. How does it adhere to the plastic. Can you scratch it iff with a fingernail? I've seen special paint just for plastic, so isn't there something that makes 'normal' paint not so good?

very interested to see the whole monty when you get everything done and put back together. :)

WHealy 12-20-2003 09:54 AM

Thanks for the help guys. Started it up this moring without issue. So disconnecting it didn't casue and CEL.

Since some of you asked, I'll post pics of there the engine bay is now. I still need to "silver" the lettering and figure out how I'm fixing the Mazda emblem. I'll post pics of the finished stuff too. But for now ...

Outdoor ...

Spin9k,

Right now I'd just call me the man with the man in the blue paint! Sorry, no idea what the CVR etc is.

For the paint, that's why I used the "Ground Coat", hence the silver color. I bought mine at Auto Zone based on what's on the can. With your question, I checked the web site more closely. Thier description is slightly different than what's on the Ground Coat can. It reads :

"Dupli-Color Metalcast Ground Coat is a fast drying, heat resistant ground coat that provides a "metal" like base on non-metal and/or paintedsurfaces in order to spray Metalcast colors to achive the "anodized-like" appearance. "

That's part of the reason I tested a few peices first. Seemed to work. I'll just have to see how it holds up over time.

Hope that helps.

syntrix 12-20-2003 01:10 PM

Definately the Baro.

Here's a pic for the "non believers"

http://rx8.swankmonkey.com/images/baro_sensor.jpg

WHealy 12-20-2003 02:21 PM

syntrix,

That looks liek the same piece i had in my hands last night. Although is that pic from an RX-7 or something? I didn't see any bolt holing it down. Nor to prevent it from coming loose in the first place. Just want to make sure I'm not missing something else ...

syntrix 12-20-2003 02:25 PM

There is a bolt for that sensor that holds it down. The plug for the wires just pushes into it. Mine says KL47 on it as the first numbers.

The pic is for RX8.

WHealy 12-20-2003 02:54 PM

syntrix,

Thanks for the additional info. Unfortunatly, it looks like I busted it. It's amazing how well it fits back in though. Must have been on a seem. See pic.

Anyone know of an estimated price for this little jewel? Looks like installation is just a slide onto the bottome tube and connecting the wiring harness ... I hope. Any help here too would be appreciate as I'd probably put it in myself. Assuming I can get the part.

WHealy 12-22-2003 09:56 AM

Baro Sensor : $230
Engine Cover Emblem : $20
Endless harrassment by "friends" over the over use of blue including completed engine bay covers : Priceless

J/K !!

I thought I would share the prices for others bennefit later. Would have been a great mod without the added expense. AS it is it's a good mod! Gotta find a shop manual to prevent these little set backs!

Thanks for all the info here.

flyboyindy 12-22-2003 10:27 PM

Whats with the "friends" in quotes =P Im not feelin the love!
