Slick50 (and other additives) for the Rensis?
 

Good, bad or neither? I found that Slick50 made a very noticeable impact on the performance/smoothness/efficiency of my '96 Ranger, but that's an I4. Is the teflon in additives such as Slick50 beneficial for the Renesis? Are any additives at all beneficial/detrimental?

I'd say some additives are beneficial. I personally use Yamaha Ring-free, to prevent carbon build-up (the rotary's nemesis), along with a few healthy redlines per day. I don't know anything about Slick50 though.

There a so few moving parts in a rotory engine that I don't see any advantages to using a friction reducing additive to the oil. It would however increase the longevity of what parts it does come in contact with.

There has never been any proof that the Teflon in Slick 50 did anything at all. There were even complaints of the product clogging oil passages. Even Dupont, the supplier of the Telflon, went on record as stating in order for Teflon to permanently coat metal, it needs to be applied in accordance with their application instructions. Floating around in the oil did not meet their application process.

Save your money.

Isn't that (Yamaha Ring-free) a fuel additive used in marine engines? If so, what does it cost you a tank to use it?

Umm...shouldn't you be using 5W-20..

I personally use Castrol GTX. I've used it in all 3 of my RX7s. However, why are you using 5W-30? Is it rediculously hot over there?

One addative I use is MMO (Marval Mystery Oil). You'll hear RX7 fans swear to this stuff (www.rx7club.com). Add to gas, add to oil, pour a lil down the carb (if it's carb'd). I've only used MMO in my RX7s though, not in the 8. I did notice that a few oil changes with MMO and the oil did come out a little cleaner. Also, the idle and coasting was slightly smoother (this is on a rotary with around 200kmiles).

i change the oil and filter every 3k miles with Castrol GTX and use 2oz of Lucas Fuel System Treatment (1 gal for $22 at Advanced Auto Parts) everytime I fill up. I also only fill up with Chevron 93 or Shell 93 (they are both 'Top Teir' but I find the Chevron gives me better mpg by about 2mpg

Always letting the car warmup before you get on it and cool down after you get on it along with regular oil changes and other matinence will give you great life/performance out of this engine. Oh and make sure you redline it it often :-) I top out the first 3 gears at least once everytime I run the car.
