Side-exit exhaust ideas...
 

I have been recently toying with the notion of a side-exit exhaust that could terminate in front of the passenger side rear tire. For two reasons...
1. I love the sound of the rotary exhaust when "un-corked". I'm not saying I would "straight-pipe" from the cat out though. (That would be horribly loud.)
2. I have yet to see it.(Possibly for a reason.)

Anyone having toyed with the same notion- I'm open for opinions, ideas, constructive criticisms, etc... I'm not even sure if there's room enough between the cat and where the pipe would have to bend out to fit a muffler, resonator, or combo. Just a little background- I'm currently deployed to the desert and am no-where near my car to look for myself. :banghead: In any event, I won't even be attempting this until October so don't hold your breath on any attempted installs. Thanks in advance for any inputs.

i would think it would look a lil weird on the 8. IMO

I always thought it would be cool if the exhaust would exit through a cutout in the MS sideskirts...

But just like the SRT10 Viper, it would melt the hell (and/or burn the paint) off of the side of the car if you did that. Coming out of the wheelwell may be ABIT safer, but there are risks of rubbing... Depending where your sticking it out/how much space you're working with/the size of the pipes.. Just my two cents. Would be sweet though :).

Dually noted. I was thinking about midway of the aero-package accent. Maybe make a half-circle notch in the "accent" about an inch tall, so that the pipe could sit high enough up for clearance issues but low enough to not mess with the paint too much. Oh.....who am I kidding. If people's catback tips are melting bumper shrouds in the back, it would disentegrate my paint being that much closer to the front. I can dream though. If nothing else it would be a short catback to annoy the neighbors(and attract all cops and ricers in a two mile radius).

Although, You could cut out a metal piece to act as a "heat shield" and protect your paint.. and only leave the tips sticking out a BIT from the side..

This has crossed my mind. Heat shield could be fabbed well enough it could almost mimic the exhaust finishers for the bumper.

YES! i've always thought that would look wicked. except i thought the autobahn sides b/c they seem to flare out a little bit at the back end, maybe allowing to more room to cut out and fit.

i also thought it would be bad ass to cut out the rotor shape in the side skirts and have that be where the exhaust goes - then use the rear oem rotary accent as an exhaust finisher. i think all that combined would be a really nice, but subtle look. i know someone makes rotary shaped exhaust tips now, but they're expensive!

anyway, if there's room down there for it, i think it'd be bad ass - i'd try it in a heartbeat if i had the mula.

It would probably be easier to exit via the passenger side since the exhaust begins on that side.

why dont you make use of the fender vents and make them exhaust vents :)

I too have been toying with the idea and was going to go to a custom shop and get them to design it. I was thinking of flat tips that would be 8"-12" in length and have them on both sides of the car.

I thought about that, but I like rolling down my windows from time to time. :lol2:

There's no such thing as a dumb idea, just dumb people....oh, wait....ahhh ^#$%! On a serious note, thanks for the input. After talking to a few friends and researching, I'm realizing there is not enough distance between where the catalytic converter ends and the rear axle to allow for the proper length muffler/resonator combo required to drive comfortably- meaning an "all-out race" pipe. Which the latter is more apt to be the primary purpose of this project's intent. For DD I will probably be buying a normal catback like the everyone else, but for fun this is just a side project. Thanks again for input everyone.

I live in southwest Missouri. No emmissions, a joke of an inspection process, and everyone is related to the cops anyway. :lol:

has nothing to do with emissions. its simply not legal to have side exhausts.

What about the SRT10? (viper) It has side exiting exhausts.

Is this a Maryland law? or federal? Just wondering who told you this. Thanks for clarifying.

As others point out already, there wouldn't enough ground clearance. The stock exhaust is tucked up in the underbody of the car, routing to the side would mean it would run under the floor and be the lowest point on the car by a mile.

They have side exhaust on the Grand-Am Series RX8 cars.

Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead, but I am currently considering doing a side exit exhaust myself. W/o the rear spats, I feel having a rectangular tip on the driver side (or the passenger side if its easier) in front of the rear tire would look really good. Keep in mind the car will be slammed, which will mean the tip will damn near sit on the ground (all part of the stance/hellaflush plan though). The pic below is a good example of what i'm talking about and actually helped influence the idea.

Not sure about VA but, Im sure if I do that in NYC, Cops will want to say Hi to me every other block.

Not to mention, why would I want the exhaust flow to have an "L" shape to it? I want it to be as straight out as possible.
