Should I change the oil & oil filter @ the first 1,000 miles on my new RX-8?

Opinions?

Is this overkill?

Thanks.

I just rolled over 1,000 miles in my brand new RX-8. I am planning to change the oil as soon as I can get to the dealer, but that's only out of love, not necessity. I think it's somewhat overkill.

I did it on my RX8. I believe that frequent oil changes in the first 5000 mi on a new motor are very important. It is not a good thing to have break in contaminants in your motor for an extended period of time. I did the change at 1000 mi, and then went to my standard interval of every 2000-2500 mi. on the RX8. Frequent changes on this car are required, due to only getting a little over half of the old oil out at each change.

Don't. From what I've read, the car comes with special break-in "flavor" of the oil. Let it go to 3000 for the best break-in. I certainly wouldn't do it before 2000K. I am myself following regular maintenance schedule and changing it at 5000K, but now we're getting into the age-old "oil change frequency" debate...

By the way, please search for "break-in oil change"... there's more "first oil change" threads than you can shake a stick at! (discussing this topic up, down, left and right)

First service should come as soon as possible since the break-in period will have lots of engine debris in the oil.

Change it man !!

What break-in oil ???? Change it man, we always have and even sooner than 1000 miles, sometimes at 400-600 miles. Get it out and get fresh stuff in, how can that be anything but good for your motor ??

Cruise on, and while you are at it, change the transmission (manual) and rear Diff oil to a quality synthetic of 75w or 80W - 90 respectively. It will be worth it in the long-run !!!

Jeff B. { who disagree's ???} be nice, I'm just a kid.....

So, majority says yes.

Astral, you're right. There are a lot of threads on this. But just like the synthetic oil issue, I find there's so much conflicting info, I can't sort it out.

The factory-fill oil has a unique additive package that isn't found in off-the-shelf oil. From what I've read, it is particularly high in Molybdenum, for example, to cope with the metal-to-metal contact that may occur while parts mate to tolerances.

So, I wouldn't change it first thing getting the car home. The manual gives the "optional" break-in period as 600 miles, iirc so that sounds like a good minimum amount of time to leave the factory oil in. I changed mine and filter around 1100 miles.

I changed mine mine around 1300 miles. I am one of the rx8 owners that need a new engine put in my car. The apex seals failed when the engine was warmed up. So now i am following the racing beat guide lines instead of the factory guide lines. I am waiting until i get 2k to start pushing the car again.

I would change it, I did with mine. I also change my oil every two months, regardless of the number of kms on the car. I use 5W20 Castol GTX. (I'm still not 100% convinced that syntic oil is better)
