scraping sound from engine

so around 3k i sometimes hear a scrapign sound coming from my engine bay ... .anyone?

yes .. oil is perfect.

Razz1 01-30-2008 11:16 PM

You have to be more specific than that.

HiTMaNN 01-31-2008 01:37 AM

I think it is due to your inferior penis size. Make sure you check that next time you start your car up

heyarnold69 02-01-2008 10:04 PM

hahahah

ok heres the thing ....

when ever I am around 3k ... coasting .... I hear a scrapign noice .... like a gringinf but high pitched... could my seal be going or the rotor scraping? what?

Mazurfer 02-01-2008 10:07 PM

You sure it's not coming from either one of the front corners.....meaning the wheel area?

Razz1 02-01-2008 10:08 PM

Get under the car and check everything including the engine bay.

Don't be lazy. Then have someone go with you to pinpoint it if you can't find it.

does it sound like marbles in a blender or can?

Jedi54 02-02-2008 12:33 AM

marbles usually aren't at that low of an rpm, are they?
(that was my original thought as well)

Could it be your brake pad squealer indicating time to change pads? You've got to be way more detailed in your description. Try to diagnose it some mroe and get back to us.

BTW, rear pad squealer is very subtle, unlike the front pad squealer. I myself was fooled initially.

That's where I was going with my question posed.

I think I know what the OP is talking about as I have the same experience on my 05. Though I've noticed that the squealing is around approx 50% engine load and it varies by speed/gear. It's only during cruise and takes a very fine adjustment of the pedal to produce it.

Letting off the throttle or increasing it will cause the squealing to go away. I have no leaks and haven't been able to find any loose parts.

It's audible from outside the car as I hear it more with the windows down. I haven't been able to figure out the source of the problem.

The sound is high pitched but not very loud. I only noticed it when I would drive with no music on.

You have to be more specific than that in order for someone to help you locate a sound on the internet.

flashwing described it very well:)

god its driving me crazy!!!!!!

i'm really just trying ot rule out a faulty oil metering pump or something major

The RX8 will whistle at certain rpms. and I think that is what you are hearing.

What you are describing could be the rear brake pad squealer. I was able to get rid of the sound temporarily by letting off the accelerator as well as downshifting and braking. The rear squealer is only on the passenger side brake pad (the front is also only on the passenger side btw). It's most obvious when you have the passenger side window down.
