is it safe to drift in a stock rx-8

Will it hurt my engine?

TheBurkeMan 03-11-2009 05:48 PM

high revs for an extended period of time will hurt any engine

Socket7 03-11-2009 05:52 PM

Why would it hurt your engine?

TheBurkeMan 03-11-2009 05:55 PM

it'll hurt your tires too...

Alexb 03-11-2009 06:05 PM

The answer is you can do it. But unless you like throwing down a ton of money on performance tires ($800 I had to two weeks ago) I wouldn't advise it.

Sure maybe a corner here and there, but anything you do to the car will shorten it's life. This is definitely not good for it. Clutch and tires esp will feel the impact.

justintime 03-11-2009 06:08 PM

Ya I was just wondering if I drifted a corner if it would hurt anything other than my tires of course

shaunv74 03-11-2009 06:12 PM

Probably your fenders.

dondo 03-11-2009 06:56 PM

whoa those were some intense responses.. i think your safety depends on your judgement and where you intend to drift..

be safe!

justintime 03-11-2009 07:18 PM

I mean if I'm in a controlled enviornment

dillsrotary 03-11-2009 07:32 PM

staticlag 03-11-2009 08:19 PM

Not if you're good.

and by good i mean, knowing your limits and never surpassing them.

TheBurkeMan 03-11-2009 08:31 PM

yeah there's one problem with that...the only way to know your limit is to surpass it, and that usually ends in disaster

good point.

parking lot+ rain.

then never try it in the dry :P

TheBurkeMan 03-11-2009 08:35 PM

yeah empty parking lots are pretty good, or old warehouse parking lots

Get a FC and learn in that. Then move on to building up your 8. Check out some local drift events or try to find some under ground sites.

Red Rex 03-12-2009 02:22 PM

Drifting is a very unnatural thing for any car to do. Its easier to do in some cars (RWD for instance) but no car is 'meant' to drift. Drifting is a form of racing. And like racing, it will hurt your car eventually and break your weakest link. Whether its your clutch, your transmission, your engine, etc. And be prepared for your maintenance bills to double at minimum (brake bads, tires, gas, coolant, etc, etc). Racing costs a lot of money. If you don't have it, don't do it.

Even then I would not call it safe on public roads. you can be really good but it is definitely more dangerous and harder on your car than not drifting.

nycgps 03-12-2009 06:54 PM

if u have to ask, then nope.

since you dont have skills to do so
