S2 trans in an S1, difficult?

I was thinking of putting an S2 trans in my S1. Is this possible, hard, easy? I like the gear ratios better.

Thanks

I did mine a few years ago and, IIRC, this is the DIY we used.

It's not particularly complicated. Just got to get the car up in the air about 15" inches or so. More is better.

Having a trans jack makes life much easier. Also, a helper with noodley arms is a bonus. Since the S2 gearbox is bigger, re-installing some of the bolts can be tough. It may be worthwhile to pull the engine mounts and the UIM to get to the top bolts but we managed without doing that (it was just really annoying).

The connectors for the neutral and reverse switches on the S2 box won't mate up with the chassis wire harness. You will have to either clip the connectors off the S1 box or just wire up some weatherproof connectors of your own. Also, on the subject of connectors: make sure you secure them away from the cat/midpipe!!! I didn't pay attention to this with mine and partially melted them. My friend made the same mistake and completely destroyed them in the middle of a 20-minute track session.

While you're in there, might as well plan on doing the clutch unless it's fairly new (if you can get the flywheel nut off). Mazdatrix has some tools that make this easier.

Also, flushing the slave cylinder wouldn't be a bad plan since it's a PITA to get to with once the S2 gearbox is in place.
