You can't tell exactly what you need until you actually crack open the motor.

But for starters you will need all the soft seals and I would replace all the hard seals on the rotors too.

Rotor housings need
-Water Jacket 4 inner and 4 outter

rotors have 3 apex seals per rotor for a total of 6 for both rotors
12 side seals
8 oil control rings
12 Corner seals. Some say they are reusable some people don't recommend it.

you will also have to replace all the springs for all the seals. I'm not sure if rx8s use two springs per apex seal but all the motors I rebuilt for my rx7 I used one long and one short spring

you need a new oil pan gasket + probably two tubes of RTV black for certain areas where the houses touch or else the motor will leak.

Front plate gasket and O rings
Dowel Pin O rings
Water Pump Gasket
Tension bolt O rings (also known as gaskets. They look like washers with a little bit of rubber on them)
Front and Rear main seal
Oil strain gasket

that's all I can think of at the moment since I'm half asleep.

Rotary engines are extremely simple and if you wanted to build it alone your first time just pick up the atkins rebuild DVD. It has everything step by step and all the specs you would need to know. I rebuilt my first one myself a years ago back when I was only 17 and had no mechanical experience except for changing oil. It is very do able.

make sure to have a feeler gauge too, and the other proper tools.

If you have experienced hands to guide you through it then go for it. Honestly I know guys who can rebuild a motor in a day. That includes pulling and dropping back in.

The hardest part is the cleaning of the rotors. Brass wire brush or pressure washer should do well. Wire wheels work great too for the faces while the brushes can reach inside the seal/spring grooves. Good luck

Right Sir! the seals are pretty easy to install but the oil rings and some other parts can easily make the difference between a successful rebuild and a short lasting one imho

I'm by no means a professional rebuilder and you know that,anyway with a good help and a "master" that supports you the first times then i think that anybody could rebuild an engine. Granted the subject takes his time and finds the right supporter

Funny how you guys make it sound so easy. yes rebuilding it may physically be easy but one little screw up in the wrong spot and you will be doing it all over. I have 6 or 7 Honda motors a L 280 motor, and the LT1 in my Z28 and its all about the tools and the details. If you have any extra motor then fine but if its your DD then that's a whole other story.

what is the point of any of us telling you what do you need? every engine is different. Just because Peter need only Apex for his engine doesnt mean David's engine needs them.

I can tell you to get all the seals/o-rings, I can even give you all the part #. I have it all in my list. but do we know if your housing is bad? nope. do we know if your rotor is bad? nope. etc.

so, just forget it.

If your car was still under warranty you would get a reman engine installed for free... Didn't you already have to buy a transmission out of pocket???...

Why not buy a low mileage engine??? there are lots of them on eBay???

Sounds like it is time to take off all your mods, sell your car, get another Manual GT with low miles and a clear title. These can be had for around $12-14k. Then you would have a factory warranty.

let me add this up for you.

new motor rebuild would cost let's say $1500-$2000, save this money sell you car for around $8k add the $$$ you did not spend rebuilding the engine on a salvage vehicle to buy another one...

here is one that has been on Autotrader, 04, 47k miles, engine replaced under warranty 2k miles ago.. for $10,500

i dont care about the warranty and plz stop mentioning it...i find it fun learning to do this stuff myself...yes a warranty would be nice but i also see this as learning experience i barely paid anything for tranny and had free labor because i learned to do it myself

did you even read what Charles Hill said about rebuilding these engines... Kids never learn...
