Keep this thread going untill you get help I would like to know what the hell that is
|
A few questions:
1 - Does it do that EVERY single startup? Or does it only do it when starting a 'cold' engine, or only a warm one, or anything else selective about it? 2 - Does it always stop after the same time? Is there any circumstances which might make it last longer or shorter? 3 - Have you tried revving the engine with the noise occurring, does it change pitch or tone with an increase in revs? |
try unpluging the air pump when it's doing it to see if it stops. then look for something wrong with it. Like lines or cracks. Definitely sounds like a vacuum!!! Motor runs to smooth so it has nothing to do with vacuum lines or the engine it's self. Has to be that air pump.

hahaha dirt devil is a good explanation! that thing is loud!

That's definitely the air pump.
Check this thread out: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/lost-air-pump-88157/ It gives more information on the air pump, how to remove it, or even how to repair it. I don't believe it's covered under the emissions warranty so you'll be out of luck there. If you decide you want to replace it hit up http://www.car-parts.com and search for an air pump on there. I just did a quick search and there are TONS of them. Looks like it'll run you $125+ assuming you're in the USA. |

I bet it is the lower bearing in the smog pump motor. Take it apart and you'll probably see corosion on the pump and bearing. I've had two go bad, and the picture is from a third one that I purchased. It is not expensive or hard to fix, just do it before the bearing locks up or the motor will fry. Oh, and from now on cover the pump before washing the engine. :)

Yep, for sure the bearings in the air injection pump. Fortunately if you have a bit of skill, it is easy to replace the 2 bearings in the pump. they are the same size as typical inline skate bearings.

I unplugged that bitch, I don't have a cat anyway. It is coming out soon.
