I just got my 2004 RX-8 Grnad Touring. I want to install a shift light, but I have never done this. Can anyone help me find information about installing a shift light?

thanks,

tksnobords 01-16-2007 03:45 AM

i think the light is a shift light, or it might be connected to the beep.

swoope 01-16-2007 04:10 AM

ok?

CEL from over revving? :)

Cody Red 01-17-2007 09:29 PM

how about a shift light that says "shift" it's just as lame as a light.

FastRX8 01-22-2007 04:23 PM

Have you got your car back yet?
We want to see the light you're talking about.

Jedi54 01-22-2007 05:35 PM

There is no shift light on an RX-8, sorry to burst your bubble. (my '86 Fiero had one though... kinnda cool feature)

I think you're referring to the Tach needle at night. I've noticed that upwards of 7,500 or 8,000 the blue lighting used to backlight our display "catches" the needle and it can quickly appear as though a light has come on. I know it sounds weird, but try driving and right before you get to 8,000 you might see a quick 'flash' of light...it's the needle reflecting the blue for a split second.

i have a Road and Track magazine from when the rx8 was just coming out. it was a supplement that was dedicated to the 8. there is one picture in the magazine i guess maybe from a prototype of the gauges with a shift light in it there. its just next to the fuel gauge. it says shift with an up arrow above it lit in green. i cant help you guys with a pic just yet but ill take one of the mag and try to post it up here.

zenmoused 03-05-2007 12:05 AM

I'm going to go ahead and say what I'm sure everyone is thinking-

WTF ARE YOU DOING DRIVING AN RX-8 IF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO SHIFT WITHOUT AN IDIOT LIGHT???

Sorry mate, but maybe you should trade it in for a cavalier or something a little less complicated to drive ;-)

tksnobords 03-05-2007 11:16 AM

I KNOW HOW TO SHIFT.

i was just curious about shift lights.

IF YOUR SO SMART WHY ARE YOU WASTING YOUR TIME TRYIN TO TALK SHIT.

swoope 03-05-2007 10:18 PM

the standard shift light that your car has on the new one you want to put in..

snipaz2420 03-09-2007 10:43 AM

i know. ive had that magazine for a while. i think i got it back when the 8's were first coming out so it was probably a prototype model. i just figured i'd post it so everyone didnt get into a brawl

ucleadguitar 03-09-2007 07:38 PM

Wasn't that the shift light that came in the Autos overseas?

snipaz2420 03-09-2007 10:27 PM

that is a shift for economy light. The 86-88 RX-7 had that. I came on at 2600 or 4000 (dependent on throttle position) so that you would shift for best fuel economy

ninjarama 03-22-2007 06:57 AM

Don't the automatics have some kind of shift light or gear light for the tiptronic?

I haven't seen a shift light, but with the windows open and the moon roof open, you cant hear the beep, I hit 10K when I first got it didn't realize it for like 1/4 a second, pissed me off big time. Need a big ass shift light.

Twiek 03-24-2007 09:17 PM

I will be doing this as soon as I get an FSM. From what I can tell, it should be pretty easy to hook up an LED or relay (to drive some kind of light) to the stock buzzer.

And for all the naysayers, how do you know when to shift?

Cody Red 03-24-2007 09:27 PM

I actually go by the sound of the engine. It's like knowing when/if you can downshift into 2nd or 3rd. It's easier to do, and it avoids you having to look down at your tach all the time, muchless for some dummy light. Learn your car by sound. There's nothing wrong with hearing the lovely symphony of a Rotary engine and memorizing it like a song.

OK, that I'll buy. Although, I doubt many people (myself included) would be able to totally avoid the cutoff (or shifting too soon) all the time.

I figured the response was going to be "just look at the tach".... The point of a shift light is so that one doesn't have to look down. It should be bright enough so that you can keep your eyes on the road.

Hey, even Formula 1 cars have shift lights ;)

Cody Red 03-24-2007 10:25 PM

Hm. Do post a pic.

i was just curious about a shift light. the beep is cool til your open the windows. its weird going from a regular engine to a rotary. but i'm gettin pretty used to her. i've done a little driftin with her..(on the track ofcourse!!!)..and watchin the needle isnt too big of a deal. basically i love my rx8...shift light or not!

MrSuicideDoor 03-26-2007 11:54 PM

i could swear i had a shift light too.

right when i hear the beep i see a little round orange light up and to the right of the tach. i've only hit it a few times since i got my 04 in december, i've never actually been looking at it when it goes off, but it's definitely there.

im' going to check something, so i might edit this in a bit

btw my car is in the shop (see my NE post) so i can't hit the beep right now, but i'll check tht too

9krpmrx8 03-31-2007 10:17 AM

I'm gonna check mine too.

georx8 02-14-2011 01:22 PM

made a custom shift light.I set it to 4.000rpm just to shoot the video and dont scare the neighbors.
You can set it to whatever rpm you want.

9krpmrx8 02-14-2011 01:45 PM

Holy thread bump  How did you wire it? Might be nice to have one that you can shut off. I would like to have one while spraying to keep my eyes on the track.

Brettus 02-14-2011 02:45 PM

/\ If you have the AP or Pro Tuner and are FI , a good way to get a shift light/buzzer for the track is to use the redundant VFAD signal line or the VDI signal line . You can program either of those to come on at any rpm you like .

I bought a cheap shift light with a potensiometer to adjust the rpm.
It has 3 cables.Power, ground and signal.I took signal from the first ignition coil (green wire). Then i removed the bulb from the original shift light and replaced it with leds which i fitted inside the OEM speedometer.
