RX-8 Coils - Shelf life?
 

I purchased stock coils, thinking I was going to replace them but my shop told me to hold until the existing ones go bad. I'm now carrying $250 worth of parts at home.

Would it be best for me to refund them now and purchase them later or the parts will work just fine as long as they are stored properly?

They won't go bad sitting on the shelf in proper conditions. Does your shop know rotary engines--specifically RX-8s?

Yes, they specialize in Mazda and do rotaries. I just hit 90k and replaced my spark plugs. I thought I needed to replaced the coils at the same time but he told me not to replace my coils until I start seeing alot of misfire or check engine light.

Thoughts on his advice?

That's not very good advice. When you start seeing misfires, the coils have already been failing for some time and your catalytic converter could be paying for it. Around here we recommend replacing them as a precaution every 30,000 miles or so.

The pumps can go even earlier,depending on how much you drive high speed with sustained long distance, putting max operating stress ,heat and load on the pump. My pump went at 60k miles. So you are surely due to replace that pump before it leaves you stranded and can cause other problems. Plugs ,coils and wires should be changed at same time. Any weak link in your ignition system can lead to cascading doom for your cat and engine. Not worth waiting until you have problems. That might be too late for your expensive engine and cat.
