Replacement Oil Filler Cap

Hi,

Shoot me, but either the oil filler cap rattled loose, or I forgot to put it back on the last time I topped up my oil...
Does anyone know if a generic oil filler cap from my local autoparts store will fit? Or do I have to be raped by Mazda for a new one?

Chris

No... the only cap that fits is the Rotory shaped one from RX8 Strakes .com

Go to your local auto parts store and buy one. It's a common thread size.

Man, am I ever glad that's not true... That stuff looks more expensive than what Mazda would charge!

I just got back from the parts store, and they had 1 in stock. It's a shallower thread, but it screws on, and fits tight (no crossthread), so I'm back in business.

It may have seemed like a stupid question to people who know, or people who live close to a parts store, but for someone like me, who's a 45 minute drive to a reasonable parts store, I was hoping it wasn't going to be a wasted trip.

Thanks,

Chris

Did the car run fine without the oil filler cap?

BTW, list price is $12.48 from Mazda.

I think so. I'm not certain how long the cap was missing. (Perhaps as long as a week) But I hadn't noticed the car running poorly. Is there any reason to believe it would run differently?
That's a reasonable price! I stand corrected and apologize for the jab at Mazda. I'm in Canada and paid $6.75 for the replacement. I'll check my dealer for a replacement cap price at my next oil change.

Thanks again,
Chris
