Removing Driver's Side Airbag?
 

Does anybody have a DIY or tips on how to remove the driver's airbag from the steering wheel? I have an annoying squeak from my steering wheel and am getting an airbag light code 19, which I believe relates to the driver's airbag if I am reading the light code list from this site correctly.

It's threads like this that make the search function fubar in the DIY section

its super easy to removed it

two 10mm nuts from the glove box area

and then it will pretty much pop out once you disconnect the wire connections

Always a good idea to disconnect the battery first.

As for the squeak, it's probably the clockspring. That could very well be the cause of the code, as well.

Actually its the crappy vbulletin search function that makes searching fubar, it hasn't worked on any of the forums I have been on, but thanks for weighing in and increasing your post count. Could a REAL moderator please move this thread to the tech garage? Thanks.

Fatti_8 do you mean the two nuts behind the steering wheel? I figured that was it, but wanted to double check first. I will be sure to disconnect the battery and let the car sit for awhile before I mess with the air bag.

I will try to snap a few photos along the way, maybe I can put a DIY together. :)

Yeah searching by thread title and reading the stickies is very difficult :rolleyes: Don't make excuses for being lazy, just search next time.

I did, using Google site search. I only found others asking the same question, and no answers. If I'm missing it maybe you can post a link to a thread that answers my question.

Why bother trying to help someone who has demonstrated that they're not intelligent enough to understand something as simple as posting a thread in the proper area?

While it may seem harsh, team and 9k are right. A simple search found the answer. My post above took me longer to to type out than it did to search for the DIY he was looking for.

and FYI, you gave him directions to remove the passenger side airbag. He's looking for the driver's side. :lol:

i may be a newb on here but have been a member on mazda247 for 4 years now, so i know all about trying to search, sometimes it work sometimes it doesn't.

but why waste your time and flame the guy, really makes this site look like a bunch of douche bags are on here.

and yes i did fail on the directions, for some reason i was thinking passenger air bag.

I wasn't even flaming you. I was politely pointing out that you should not try to go after members who have contributed quite a bit to the forum. It will just make matters worse. You may not be a newb on 247, but you're still a newb here. The sites are vastly different, as is the amount of information regarding the rx8.

Yeowch, I gotta say it's super lame seeing so many ppl getting on anyone's case if they dare ask a question that someone has asked before. I'm seeing it in basically every single thread I'm looking at. As a newbie to the site, it's absolutely NOT making me feel welcome. Come on, RX-8's aren't exactly the most popular car, I think a sense of community is important!

Anyway, as for the air bag on the driver side... is it inside the steering wheel? In order for my wife to reach the pedals, she has to get REALLY close to the steering wheel. Honestly, if we had a head-on collision, I'm really concerned about how much damage the airbag would do.

There is a sensor in the seat that relay's it's position to the SRS system. Both front bags are staged, in that they open at different forces based on front seat position. It's designed to not kill someone sitting close, but still be able to open big enough and fast enough for someone sitting far away. Unless she sits six inches away from the wheel, she'll be fine.

As far as the hostility goes, it happens from time to time. Don't let it dissuade you. The site has a lot to offer and it's not always like that. People just get sick of the same questions being asked over and over, and bad info being spilled out. Yes the search feature can suck and too much info can be displayed, but if you use google, or just simply do a more granular search, everything is easier to find.

For what it's worth, my harshness was towards the newb that steered this thread in that direction. Asking for a fight here is a sure way of getting one. Just my .02.

Gee, I wonder why that is? Next time try something like "Oops, sorry my bad for overlooking this, but thanks for letting me know it" rather than the sassy attitude. There are numerous people like yourself posting questions daily in the DIY area. It's aggravating to the point that people aren't welcome over it. So some noob goes away. That is no skin off our back. It just shows how your head is screwed on backwards. This site is a wealth of informstion and it's for your benefit to be here, not the other way around.

Fuzputnz- your reply is what should be posted when a new member makes a mistake. It was firm but still helpful. Unfortunately there are a few frequent posters on this board that seem to relish in rudely chastising new posters. They are what makes this board seem uninviting.
