Removing cat, CEL?

I looked around and could not find a 100% correct response, so I wanted to ask in a new post...

If I am getting a new exhaust and switching out the stock cat for a catless midpipe and my cars CEL turns on, will I be able to just put the stock cat back on when its time for emissions testing and have the CEL turn off?

I also read that the accessport tuner thing works, but I wanna make sure that it does before I spend the money ( I know about all the tuning benefits and all that)

Is there an inexpensive way around the CEL, like the O2 foolers I read about on the forums, but are there ones that work 100% or is the only 100% guarantee the accesport?

Thank you for your help, I am new to this because I have never removed the cat from a vehicle and I don't have another car so I need to be able to pass emissions when the time comes.

Don't know if it matters but I live in Illinois, so I don't know if there are some different emissions standards or whatever.

Again, thanks for any help.

You must not have looked very hard because this has been answered quite a few times and is actually in one of the stickies members link new people to. https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discuss...rx-8-a-233937/

That should tell you everything you want to know. It doesn't mention putting the cat back on for inspection but it really doesn't need to. Returning something to stock form will get you stock results. Depending where you are in Illinois you don't even need to smog but since you are asking I assume you had to smog your previous cars. http://www.dmv.org/il-illinois/smog-check.php

Oh wow, I totally forgot that I read that when I first got my 8, 2 years ago.

I did try using google to search the forums, and when I searched I didn't get that post...

So you think putting the cat back on will cause the CEL to go away?

Thanks for your response.

Yes. If you put your car back on the cel will clear itself. I'm not sure how many cycles it'll take to clear but if you have a Cobb AP, it won't matter. Reinstall your cat, clear CEL with Cobb. Go get smogged.

Awesome, I am really excited for my new exhaust, and can't wait til it gets here. Hopefully I won't have problems installing it.

Thank you so much for your help!

I was just going by your join date for when you could have read the sticky.

If you clear the cel you will need to drive for at least 30 miles to be emissions ready. Sometimes it can take more and it generally takes many different driving sessions. You need to drive some then turn the car off and let it cool down and then drive some more and you should be fine.

I live in CA. I had the AP midpipe for three months and went back to the OEM cat-converter. CEL went away the minute I started the car with the OEM cat. I didn't delete the CEL when I had the AP midpipe prior to putting the OEM cat on. But I had pending codes and that went away after I drove the car around for five minutes. I didn't have to disconnect the battery or remove the "room fuse" to clear thepending CEL codes.

Cool, thanks so much for your time. Yeah didn't join til after I got the car, but now I'm glad I did.

Thanks again everyone!

Grace you have to take me for a ride, I am trying to convince myself that I should invest in the AP mid pipe as I keep blowing out resonators -_-

as the car aged (read: CHEAPER TO OBTAIN) we gonna get more and more noobs who never research and just wanna ppl to spoon feed them every single time ...

what happen to the world ? ...

The Cobb AP device alone doesn't have the ability to clear/mask CEL's of any kind.

You need to create your own (copy) ECU map using Access Tuner Race.
