Removing Brake Rotors
 
There a couple of screws in the center of the rotor, which I assume I have to take off. My question is, how did you all get them off w/o stripping them. They boogers are in there tight! I tried a little last night, but I started to round it out. I quit trying. Any advice before I do any real damage.

btw I'm just replacing the front, because of a warped rotor.

Impact Screw Driver or drill them out. If you drill them they are not needed once you put the wheel back on.

i highly recommend an impact screwdriver. got one from sears for my rotor install, made life so easy, well worth the money

You need a impact screwdriver. Find some one who actually worked on their motorcycle. They should have one.
They might even give it to you!

That and a hammer.

I 32nd the impact driver. I had to buy one from Sears when I stripped 3 of the 4 screws trying to get them off. I had to buy new ones from the dealer (which are gold-plated and pretty expensive for tiny screws). I added a bit of lube when putting them back on.

I worked on this Friday. Worked like a charm. It was tough getting the old one off. Lot's of rust. But some wd 40, and a rubber mallet, and we were all good.

Braking is smooth, and normal!

But I'm still getting this noise as if it isn't Just started noticing it Saturday night. I might jack the car up tongiht or tommorow, and see if I can't figure out witch wheel is dragging. I am guessing a warped one in the back. But we'll see I guess.

What the heck are they made of? I thought it was that steel/aluminum welding phenomenon. Useless screws, you will die this weekend.

Reviving this from the dead.... but there is no reason a hammer drill wouldn't work instead of an impact screw driver correct?

Hard to say, sometimes they come right off with a normal screw driver. Hell I have had them fall out when you remove the wheel, :lol:

A little heat from a little propane torch works wonders also.
I like to put them back on to hold the rotor steady while putting the calipers back on.

Yeah I reuse them as well with a little loctite. Also an impact hammer is like $15.00 at HF. But he is in Canada so I'm not sure if they are as cheap up there.

Our brake parts are made by Sumitomo, and some parts are very common in the wild, as they are shared by many other cars. I bought a set of safety screws at O'Reilly that were marked for Ford Focus that fit for about $4.

I also use an impact driver with a #3 impact rated bit to remove mine. But, rather than Loctite, I use anti-seize!

Well I guess I'll give the hammer drill a shot, if all else fails I run over to home depot and look for an impact screwdriver..... technically a hammer drill and impact screw driver do the same thing so I can't imagine it not working, other than my rotors are the originals from 2004, but my car has never seen winter so. Got some EBC slotted rotors and some green stuff brake pads going on this weekend; along with my Koni Yellows and new Sarx WG actuator.

The hammer drill should work. Just make sure your bits and adapters are all impact rated, and use a #3 Phillips bit.
