Rebuilt Engine Start Up
Hello everyone,
I recently rebuilt and reinstalled my engine. According to my piston compression tester (valve removed), both rotors are at about 90PSI. I have started it three times so far, but I do still need to insert oil to the UIM to get it started. What is concerning is that even after running it for four or five minutes today, it was still producing smoke which appears to be an excessive amount of burnt oil. It is not as thick as the first cloud of smoke on start up, but still noticeable. For that amount of runtime, I would have expected all of the additional oil I added to be pushed out the exhaust. If it matters, the exhaust is also removed. My gut is telling me I fudged up on an oil control ring even though I quadriple checked everything, but I was wandering whether or not anything also could cause a problem like this? Perhaps bad fuel injector wiring? I also get, albeit less, smoke when I crank the engine in deflood mode. |
I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet, it takes a LONG time to burn off oil at idle. Do check the injector wiring though, only you can confirm it's good.

So you've only run it 5 mins total? Does it run okay besides that?

Have you checked the troubleshooting guide here on this site or at foxed.ca (search on Google)> If it runs and you're not getting any MIL/CEL codes but it's hard to idle and putting your foot gently on the gas pedal fixes everything you've got an air/spark/gas issue (like the MAF is dirty and cannot get the gas/air mixture right). Thoughts group?

I am able to turn it on cold without adding oil and it holds a rough idle now, and it smokes less. Getting better by the minute.

You have a lot of assembly oil to burn through, plug the new seals are seating to the housings and irons. You may have a small vacuum leak causing the stalling. I would take it for a short gentle drive and see if anything improves.

If the smoke doesn't recede at about 5 - 6 hours of runtime, then I'll consider taking the engine out again. It's not too bad of a job now that I know how to do it efficiently. |
The smoke seems to be coming from an oil overfill. There is oil in the intake tube. Car parked on incline, so it thew my oil levels off.

Should only be 3.7 quarts of oil in the pan when changing the oil or in your case, refilling th eoil after a rebuild. Hope that helps.
