Quick way to change oil filter???
 

Sup everyone, i was just curious how to pget in for the kill and swap the filter out for my dad, he's out of town and expects me to have it done by tomorrow but it's kind of annoying. All help would be greatly appreciated.

Take out the dipstick...use left hand and unscrew the filter...put a rag between the filter and block to catch the oil that will drip out.....remove filter.

Use a bit of oil to lube the filter seal.....tighten it until it touches....and the 3/4 turn more.

Drain oil, and refill....ten minutes tops :)

Yea but it was uncomfy for me i thought if you possibly got under it it could be easier but from above i just don't feel good. I've done plenty of oil changes =] but just another reason why IMO hondas are easier to work on, of course im a juvenile, naive, etc. 17 year old student :D.

hah ano way you can get it from below...if you are changing the oil and filter...there won't be much of anythign driping out of the filter.....if not yes use a rag to catch it.

but only way to get at it is to reach around and twist

Is this the first oil/filter change?

The factory uses large sumo wrestlers to tighten the filter - if it hasn't been changed already, I would say a teenage novice has NO chance at getting it off.

Seriously, you won't be able to do it - maybe take it to Mr. Lube or someone who knows the trick of breaking a stuck filter free, because all you will do is damage it, making it undrivable.

HAHA yeah, you need filter pliers, our dealership has special pliers that we use on those annoying first oil changes. But yeah, as the other person said, take out the dip stick, and go underneath the hoses there. I wouldn't take it to "Goober Lube", its worth the extra couple of bucks to take it to the dealership. I think that our LOF is $27.99. (Castrol GTX Oil)

Go get a 65/67 two step fliter wrench from Advance, Napa or equivalent, the metal kind that fits over the end of the filter, a 12" extension and at least a 24" wrench to get enough torque to get the thing loose. I did notice that I had to sort of jam and beat the wrench onto the filter supplied with the car, it had a slightly larger diameter than the replacements I got from Trussville. The filters are on tight, but they will come off, just be careful and take your time. It will drip a little, but the rag will catch it all, the drain plug is easy. I have quite a long reach and was able to get it off and drain the oil without jacking the car up. Once the filter is off, follow the other recommendations and you will be all done in about 15 minutes. I am amazed how quickly you can change the oil in this car, now if the wife's Tribute would just have the filter in a better place so that I didn't have to clean the downpipe everytime, and a plug that was not buried in the back behind everything I could do both vehicles in 1/2 hour.

65mm/14 sides filter cap wrench + flex joint + 12" extension + nice socket wrench = *very* easy filter removal :D:

Once you find the filter will turn, poke a small hole in the top of the filter. This will help the oil drain out from the filter.

are you supposed to remove the filter first and then drain the oil? i've always drained the oil first and then removed the filter.

I drain the oil and then remove the filter. Actually, as long as you do both before turning your car back on you'll be fine. All I use to take off the oil filter is a twist of the wrist. Takes a while though.

I think I know what you are saying Danny. The position to get to the oil filter is hard. I have an 04 and a buddy of mine has an 05. Theres a clear difference in room and I can get to my filter rather easily. When I tried doing his there are just things in the way making me have to twist around. You'll get use to it.

i use a 12" long ratchet extension with the mazda filter wrench adapter.

just loosen up the air condition line from the fire wall so you can have a little more room to squeeze you arm through. i have fairly large arms and couldn't get a good grip on the filter to turn it until I unhooked that line. it was a piece of cake after that.

NONONO just take out the dipstick and then reach under there and MANHANDLE the thing. Don't go disconnecting all this other BS, the oil change pays .3hrs for a reason, it shouldnt take you longer than 18 minutes to perform. :spank:

...I wear XL gloves...so I don't have small hands by any means.........just take out the dipstick and turn the filter counter clockwise to get it out...just watch your knuckles...I always seem to rough them up on something if I forget to wear gloves :D:

takes me about 20min. to have mine changed. i've gotten used to doing the oil change, but i still find it rather difficult at times to put in the jack under my car for me to get under it and remove the oil pan plug.

^get a Fumoto Drain Valve, never have to jack the car up to change oil again

I got one, and i just finished changing oil, no spills/drips at all, and no jacking car up! :D:

but I think there's a small oil pan leak, gonna have to track it down... grrrrr :mad:

^^ the 8 is pretty low to the ground. how could you get to the plug to take out all the oil?

it replaces the oil pan drain plug, once installed, i just reach right under the car, and flip a switch, and voila, oil gets drained!

seems really useful, but i'd worry that by chance, something might hit it and release the valve and spill all the oil...next thing you know, your engine's a stone :Freak_ani

it's highly unlikely, where the drain plug is, that it will get hit by anything that will open it up, unless you take the 8 offroading :p:
