Quick question about s2 starter N3R3 model

Hey guys, i am looking for an N3R3 starter motor from an s2 m/t to upgrade my s1 starter (most likely the n3z1 since i am an 06, though i haven't verified)

I am having a hard time finding many, and the ones i do find that are mazda oem specifically are around 4-500 dollars. No thank you.

I did however find a brand new Mitsubishi manufactured unit for under 200 - now, my instinct tells me this is indeed identical , as mitsubishi more than likely were the original manufacturers of the mazda branded units, but i am just looking for some verification about this.

If so, are people really paying hundreds of dollars extra for a sticker that says mazda on their starters???

I am really considering buying at this price so anyone who knows for sure please let me know. Thanks as always!:icon_tup:

Then there are these 3rd party clone units that people are reporting good things about for only 150- anyone have first hand experience??? MAZDA RX8 RX 8 2003-12 BRAND NEW SUPER UPRATED HI TORQUE 14 TOOTH STARTER MOTOR | eBay

People have bought this one and had good luck.

^^ yeah, that is the mitsubishi one i mentioned. I guess price would be the same after shipping factors in. Interesting, everyone seems to be impressed with these things.

It seems this is having even more of an impact than replacing all the other ignition components combined for people.

I am only experiencing minor start hiccups, occasionally, maybe 2-3 seconds max but its still enough to make driving the car daily less enjoyable, so i hope this will work for me as well!

(still going to replace all 90k ignition stuff as well anyways, but i might start here)

It will give you at least another 50-60RPM of cranking speed over the S1 starter.

Just go to AutoZone and buy the Duralast starter (2W) for the 2007+ model car. I have an '04, dropped it in and it does wonders.

redcivic 05-31-2016 09:50 AM

It is still an inferior starter to the S2 starter. But of course if you have the old 1.4KW S1 starter even the the higher output S1 starter will seem like a vast improvement.

The 2007+ model is the S2 model with the 2W starter. The point is it is cheaper at around $100 (with core exchange, $130 without) then to pay ~$400 for OEM.

No it is not the same as the S2 (09+ Manual) starter. Completely different design.

Oops, yea I got my S1 / S2 years wrong.

What is weird is Duralast has a 1.4W motor (manual) for those under the year of 2007, but all of their 2007+ starters have 2W and more teeth - which is the same for the S2 upgraded starter since it is also a 2W starter with like 13 teeth?

Even when I had got a new engine and new ignition system, my car was still long at cranking over. The starter was the culprit!

I wouldn't worry about buying OEM for the starter as they are kind of pricey imo. Again, since you have a S1, get the more powerful starter from an S2. So, if you want to go OEM, sure, otherwise any other brand, look for one that fits an S2 manual. This should solve your problems.

I went to Autozone and picked up the starter I mentioned above and it is night and day as to how my car starts now.

You want the S2 starter if you have a manual. 300RPM FTW. Even the 2KW S1 starter is shit.

9k's pictures show the whole story -

You want/need the N3R3, no other.

I just picked up a used one on Ebay for $90, shipped!

Look for the model years 2009 to 2012.

I know this is a bit of a zombie thread but I guess that there will be a few new RX8 owners as these are incredibly cheap high performance sports cars. I just picked up an immaculate 2004 192 RX8 with 64k on the clock for £1500 and it has been owned by 2 enthusiasts all of its life. The car is stunning and original - every service done by Mazda, every MoT passed without advisories and the last guy only had it 18 months and replaced coils, plugs, leads, waxoiled it, tidied up a couple of light marks and basically lost about £750 all in. So I've got a bargain.

The car starts perfectly, hot or cold but I've read around enough to know that the starter motor can be an issue so as a preventative measure I picked up a N3R3 starter from autodoc.co.uk for about £105 plus delivery.

I have nothing to do with this company but feel it is only right to highlight decent prices when I come across them.

Fitting it was easy, although I did have to buy a 450mm breaker bar as the bolts were firmly fixed. I checked the old starter and it is indeed the totally original one - N3H1 - and not even the revised model.

I've also reconditioned the battery with my CTEK 5.0 battery conditioner (which I had for my Porsche but flogged that thing as it was cripplingly expensive to own) and the car starts like a dream.

So, glad I've bought this fab car but can see me losing my licence within a few months. It is just a weekend car to blast around the countryside in but it puts a great smile on the face!
