Question about transmission fluid overfill
Hey guys, I finally got around to chaning out my stock tranny fluid with Redline. I was stupid and parked the car at at incline, so I ended up filling the tranny with all 2 quarts of fluid. I think it should only be 1.8 quarts, so my question is "are there any problems with overfilling the transmission by .2 quarts?" I tried searching for this, but nothing came up. Thanks in advance.
David BTW, I took the car out for a test drive and it shifts really smoothly. My first "performance mod" on my baby and it's well worth it. |
Dave...I filled mine with the car level on four ramps and it took two quarts of Redline. Nothing came out the filler hole and that's the indication of full. Been 5/6 weeks, no dramas. Forget about it, it's okay.

Mine took the full two as well. It's been changed twice now, and it was 2 each time with none leftover. Nothing to worry about.

I just did mine this weekend as well (Red Line rocks!) - it was within an ounce of taking both quarts when mine started to dribble out... I would agree you're fine.
BTW, for those of you who've used Red Line in your tranny before- I swore when I did my Miata the oil was bright red... but I think I may have used MTL instead of MT90... am I remembering it wrong? I was surprised to see the MT90 I put in the tranny was yellow, like the diff oil. |

Whew, thanks guys. Now I won't be as paranoid driving my 8 around. Oh, just one more thing, I was just curious as to what torque setting everyone torqued their filler and drain bolts to? I followed the DIY from Omicron's thread, http://www.5cats.org/rx8/trans_diff_refill/ , but the torque said 27-48 N-m, so I just set it to 35 (split the difference). Just curious, that's all.

Ditto here. I pumped in two quarts of redline, and I was worried so I lowered the car to be level to see if anything came out..........and ........ nothing came out. It has been shifting great for 3 weeks with the Redline, all two Quarts of it.

Well...here is an update...sorta :)
I just swapped out my rear differential fluid and I wasn't able to access the fill plug as easily as I thought I could. I ended up not using my torque wrench and just winging it with a regular socket wrench with a socket extension. |
