Pulling Data via CAN OBDII Port for Data acquisition systems

I tried looking on the threads and didn't find anything that listed what type of info we can pull from a CAN adaptor into a data acquisition system. I am sure someone here has done some research and figured out some neat stuff we can get! Post up what you have been able to get and if you feel like it feel free to share what your doing with that info.

I am using a DL1 data logger and a Dash 2

So far through the CAN adaptor we are logging:
1.) RPM (Also we think we figured out that the RX8 has 4 pulses per revolution, if you know otherwise let me know!)
2.) water temperature which is nice since I can set up an alert to flash at the driver if it gets to hot. My only concern is how often it is sending the signal and where it is actually measuring the water temp from.
3.) still playing but hope to get plenty more by next week like oil pressure, oil temp, steering input, brake pressure, fuel pressure, fuel level, and on and on.

most of the items you listed are not provided on the OE system and will require external sensor additions

otherwise you can get nearly everything else provided by the OE system, try looking in the service manual

ShellDude 03-19-2013 11:14 PM

Series 1

AFR Actual
AFR Commanded
Fuel Pump voltage
Water Temperature
Ambient Air Temperature
Barometer
Intake Temperature
Tire Pressure
Tire Temperature
EGT
Vehicle speed
RPM
STFT
LTFT

Series 2

All the above plus quite a few others such as door locks and radio info as everything runs on the CAN bus.

There are unpublished PIDs out there for things such as steering wheel controls and cruise buttons too.

Thanks for the list! I never thought of the service manual... Makes total sense though!

I thought for sure pretty much all the dash stuff was available and brake info because of the abs, But I am sure I was wrong which explains why the oil info didn't record.

Does it use the tpms for tire tpms? I had no idea it could get that...

Looks like the dl1 is somewhat limited and doesn't pull all that data anyway :(

You just need a better logger ;)

I like the AIM but for grand-am and World Challenge you need a race keeper anyway so a dash is just a dash at that point. AIM is still a great set-up even if your going to use with a race keeper system, I just didn't spend all that extra when I knew I wanted a DL1.

I went with the DL1 because most of the SCCA guys in the north east run a DL1. I think 5 of the fast guys just in my run group have a DL1. (they also have motec, Haltec and/or some other from of stand alone ECU) BUT They are also willing to share data (most of them) which makes life much better when going to a new track and you want some solid good data to use as a reference. It is one of the things I like about club racing... everyone is still willing to help eachother out to make the racing closer... until of course you are faster than them :naughty:

Thanks for the knowlege base that you guys shared. Do any of you know if in fact the 4 pulses per revolution is accurate. It seems to be but I don't want to find out after I am on course that I am wrong...

a two rotor rotary has a combustion event every 180 degress of output shaft rotation, like a 4 cylinder piston engine.

but it does fire all four coils, two for each rotor, each rotation.

if you wanna use your brain (not recommended), the Mazda has 3 faces per rotor, but it is geared 3/1 so that one face is at TDC of the compression stroke per revolution of the output shaft.

furthermore, while a boinger has 180 degree strokes, intake, compression, power, exhaust, it takes two rotations to fire all the cylinders

the rotary needs 3, which is 1080 degrees, so the strokes are 270 degrees. one of the reasons it makes so much power.

Like Team said, some of these are not present on the car's CAN data simply because there are no sensors for them, but to be specific:
  • Oil pressure: no sensor present (only a pressure switch)
  • Oil temp: no sensor present
  • Steering input: there is a PID for steering angle, in degrees
  • Brake pressure: there is a PID from the DSC system described as "brake fluid pressure sensor" - this might be what you want, unless you mean pedal pressure
  • Fuel pressure: no sensor
  • Fuel level: there is a PID for this, in percent

The Goodbox can access all of the pid's from the CANbus..you might want to talk to Dondo.......
