Premix Anyone?

I was just wondering something. I spoke to a few people that own RX-7's, past and present, that have added/add 2 stroke oil into their tanks. This, of course, before the oil metering pumps were used. I spoke to one individual who told me that even though the new 8's have the oil metering pump, he insisted that I still premix the fuel so that the rotar housings last longer. Does anyone here do this? I premixed my 8 a few weekes back and it seemed to run real nice, and I haven't since.
I added about 6 oz. of castrol 2-stroke before fillup, and then filled tank with about 12 gallons...

uh, no. RX-8 has very sophisticated oil injectors controlled by computer. Premix is unneccesary for sure and will probably foul your plugs.

I have owned 5 RX-7s in my short life but won't be buying an RX-8. Regardless, I ALWAYS added 2 stroke oil to my fuel tank. On average, I put in between 8-10 oz per tank. I did this after my first RX-7 had an oil metering pump failure that cost me my apex seals. You won't know until it is too late if your oil metering system fails.

The RX-8 injects even less oil than previous models and I think this was done only for emissions and that long term engine longevity will suffer. I never had a problem with plugs fouling or injectors clogging. The plugs are designed to handle oil burning. As for the injection system, a can of BG44k every 10k miles probably prevented any problems with the premix.

While we are on the subject of oil, 5w-20 is too thin in my opinion and is only recommended by Mazda to satisfy CAFE requirements.

I'd use a 5w-30 in the winter and a 10w30 in the summer. In hot climates, I'd use a 5w-40 oil.

Instead of buying an 8, I'm going to throw in a LS1 or LS6 into my 91 Vert. I'll get better mileage, incredible power, and still be ahead by many thousands.

In my RX-7s, nothing thinner than 10w-40 was ever used.

Yes please let's not start a premix thread that will wind up with new/potential owners ranting about how they can't believe that in 2004 their new car requires them to premix oil in the gas...

Generally the premix thing was for folks who removed or otherwise disabled the oil metering system - generally hard core enthusiasts or racing types. There's no reason whatsoever to think the oil metering system in the rx8 isn't delivering the perfect amount of lubrication for long engine life.

IMO premixing the gas is a complete waste of time unless you've removed the oil metering pump or otherwise seriously modified your engine.

Like I said, when I added oil into the tank, the engine seemed to run smoother than usual. I just think that extra lubrication in the housing is a good thing, IMO....

You don't NEED to add any premix.
That's what the oil metering pump is for.
But if you really want to, it won't mess up anything. I used Marvel Mystery Oil in the FD when the OMP was screwed up.

I had an 1985 with 350,000km on the engine and didn't pre-mix once. The engine ran fine. If you are runnin pre-mix on a rotary with the OMP still in tact then you are wasting your time/money, nevermind the fact that you could be fouling your plugs and if you put too much then you are clogging the cat as well.

As much oil as my '8 burns, premixing would just be a waste/rob power.

Just like a 2 stroke. Either it has oil injection, or you premix. But you don't do both.

You guys are missing the possibilities. This thread could go on for months arguing over the best 2-stroke oil to use...

Seriously, everyone's cars are still under warranty. If the metering system fails, you get a new motor.

Just one more thing to add to the discussion!

I too was a skeptic but started adding 4 oz of smokeless, ashless two stroke oil to my '93 FD about a year ago. My engine is getting tired and had marginal compression and vaccum. Since running premix, both my vaccum and compression have improved and the car generally runs smoother. Just a little peace of mind and added longevity IMO, however you will burn out your cats faster running premix.

DON'T mix Marvel Mystery Oil with gas for the Renesis. It has high phosphorus content (bad for catalytic converter).

Thanks Nubo, I was just wondering about Marvel Mystery oil. Didn't know about the phosphrous bit. Won't use it now. I got 268,000 mile out of my old Explorer using it, but with the Renisis dumping lightweight oil into the mix all the time, I guess it would be redundant anyway.
