Precautionary measures...
 

Greetings RX-8'ers,

An extended overseas business/vacation trip for 6 weeks will keep me away from my 2006 RX-8. If it isn't run during this time of absence might I experience any problems with it when I get back? I'm contemplating on taking the battery out or might that cause more problems?

take the battery out and hook it up to a "battery tender" you can buy these at any autoparts store. That being said, i keep my rx8 garaged over most of the winter and it has gone 8+ weeks without starting and has been just fine.

If you don't want to pay for anything you could also simply detach the negative battery cable ans tuck it away from the battery.

Personally, I'd get a battery tender and hook it up without unhooking the battery.

Unhook the battery and you lose all your preset radio stations, and may also have to reset the ECU when you return.

Course there are those aspects to think about. I will grant that if I had to store my car for three weeks I'd consider throwing on a trickle charger but only because I have a battery charger available.

Any reason why no one recommended fuel stabilizer? I was under the impression those should be used when you are gonna let it sit for a while (over a month)?

You only need the fuel stabilizer (Sta-bil) if you are storing more than 3 months. Storing with a full tank will help keep the fuel fresh too.

6 weeks is fine. I'm at college and my car is at home, and it does fine for up to two months without any battery problems or anything. Just put it on jack stands to keep the tires from forming flat spots, and throw in some fuel stabilizer. If you're afraid of moths, put a bar of soap open in there. Works like mothballs but without the smell.
