Power steering needs reset.
 

hey all, just need some advice, my wife moved my 192 rx8 (04) and flooded engine had to get RAC out to de-flood it but while de-flooding the tech burnt out the starter motor :nono:

I have since upgraded the starter motor with the newer upgraded one. The car had stood for a few weeks while I sourced the starter in this time the battery went dead so the car needs a new battery now aswell.

Once I had replaced the starter motor I jump started the car and the car fired up first time altho now I am missing the power steering. Have checked the inline fuse on the white cable that connects to the battery and that is fine not blown.

I understand its got an electric power steering system so hopefully if I get a new battery then the steering will work but I am just assuming hence why need the help of you guys please.

will I need to put the car onto axle stands and replace the battery before I do this as prob need to be super human to turn the wheels without power steering he he he

and have I lost power steering because the battery has been dead for a week or so ??

It re-calibrates the electric power steering. needs to be redone whenever the battery gets disconnected. You shouldn't have to jack it up. Just muscle it. You could spray some water on the ground first then park the front tires on the wet to help a little if needed.
edit: I think I remember the owners manual saying to do it with the key on but engine not running. You should double check .

P.S. In the future please be more specific with the title of the thread. "help lol" will help nobody in the future that may be doing a search for help. Plus its kind of annoying to see on the "new posts" list. "power steering not working after new battery install" would have been better. The title box has a bit of room for you to be specific. :)

I thought that was for TCS/DSC? I know in my sport(which does not have TCS or DSC) I never have to turn all the way left and then right after removing the battery cable. My steering works fine every time.

^ what he said. Check the main power cable from battery to the starter. It may have gotten too hot during the debacle and damaged neighboring wires. The other cheap but common failure is the ps harness connectors under the airbox tray. Plenty of threads on that problem.

I disconnected the battery to do my fog light rewire and had to reset the steering. At first I forgot about it till the power steering didn't work after. I have a series 2 though so it may be different.

Sure sounds like it though if the battery went completely dead over winter storage.

edit: Just looked in my owners manual. It says to reset steering wheel for dsc/tcs. But nothing about power steering. I could be wrong. It does say however about the dash icon with the steering wheel and a "!" next to it indicating a malfunction... Do you have that lit up on the dash?

Okay so my power steering light is on and reading through your comments the correct procedure to fix that is to simply just turn the wheels to the right and to the left? I know my battery was replaced before purchase and I'm thinking this re-calibrate wasn't done. I just want to know the correct procedure done .. . thanks!

is it same for both left hand driven and right hand driven cars ?
and after the turn we have to center the steering, turn the key off and then turn it on right ?

Before you do anything guys take a look at the 80 amp fuse under the hood in the black box (Power Control Module)
Make sure it's good. Mine looked good and took me 2 days to figure it out. Actually on the Mazda 5 it's a 60 amp fuse or 40 I had to join the two terminals together to fix the issue that was after I removed the headlight and inner fender (passenger side) and replaced the Power steering pump.

And what you could do is what I did because I had that issue clean all of your connections with Electronic cleaner and dielectric grease. It’s sold my problem and I didn’t have to spend $1000 for a brand new steering system or even $100 for used on eBay. Just spent 15 bucks and I cleaned them!

I cleaned the terminals and put it back together and... Nothing. Still won't work. It does come and go intermittently. Mostly not working.dash light is on

Hey I’m not sure how to create an own discussion for this but when I reset my power steering by turning the wheel all they way to the left then all the way to the right and turn it on the steering wheel turns perfectly fine until I turn the car off then when I turn my car back on it gets super stiff again. If I reset the power steering it then works fine again. Any idea on what may be wrong?
