Plug review.

Performing maintenance on my 2004. Decided to change out the spark plugs and wires. Upon pulling the old plugs, I became very concerned. I would appreciate your thoughts on these. Is this normal or should I be looking for other issues? Car runs well and there are no codes.

Are you running a premix ? How many miles on those plugs , Coils ?

D13 04-11-2015 08:19 PM

No premix, but I am using Royal Purple 5w20 for normal oil. I have owned this car for ~about 2 years. I have no idea how many miles are on these plugs (apparently too many).

I began seeing more misfires and some warm start issues. That is why I changed the plugs and wires [all NGK].

After the plug change, car is much more smooth and response. I was honestly surprised it was running after seeing those plugs.

Pretty gunked up but normal with any serious mileage. Just try and use the best gas you can and maybe think of premixing as well. If you don't know the mileage then you should probably change the coils and wires as well.

What is it with people always throwing money at Royal Purple?

D13 04-12-2015 04:50 PM

It's pretty.

And I have had good experiences with it.

TeamRX8 04-12-2015 06:20 PM

What oil can you directly attribute bad experiences with?

Otherwise if you continue to use 5W20 it may not make any difference ....

D13 04-13-2015 08:11 AM

In the RX8? None, haven't owned it long enough. In other vehicles - Quaker, Castrol, Shell.

Pennzoil, Mobil, Valvoline, and RP have always been the engines that looked the best when I had to rebuild/do maintenance.

Do you have a different recommendation from 5W20?

TeamRX8 04-13-2015 02:05 PM

many members here use at least 5W30 (Japan RX8 spec), some run 0W40 or 5W40 (diesel truck)

you might look at Mobil1 from Walmart, about $26 for a 5 qt jug ...
