Passenger side mirror loose?

Hey all

I am in Oz so my steering wheel is on the right hand side of the car.

I have noticed that when I shut the passenger door I can hear another noise on top of the normal noises one hears when shutting a car door. I traced it back to my side mirror.

It would appear that when you shut the door when it is further out from the frame the inertia causes the side mirror to briefly move slightly towards the folded position and then back, making a strange sound. I guess it means the side mirror mount may need tightening if it can be? I noticed a small plastic cap under the mirror and assume this hides the screw?

If it is pretty normal I will just leave it. If I shut the door closer tot he frame it is not as noticeable.

anyone else noticed this?

Hey, i have this same problem. I tried removing the mirror yesterday and i got all the screws out but i couldnt figure out how to pull the mirror apart to have a look at what could be loose inside.

Could someone offer some advice here?

My theory on this is that there should be a screw or nut holding the mirror to the mirror base that attaches to the car. At the joint where it swings there looks like a dust cap underneath. Did you find anything under this dust cap? Could yo not just tighten it up?

Did you have any luck tightening your side mirror?

the mirror itself just pulls out. takes some force but it will just pop off. There are three ball joints that snap into holders. The housing is held in place from three screws you can access from behind the tweeter on the door... or just the black cover if you dont have a tweeter

I think I have not explained myself very well, so apologies. What I am trying to find out is how the mirror connects to the housing.

You have effectively two parts to the mirror housing. One part bolts to the side of the car, the other houses the actual mirror itself and the motor for the electrics.

They are joined at a swivel joint so the mirror can fold away next to the car body. I.e if you were to push on the back side of the mirror housing facing the rear of the car it will fold towards the car. It is this swivel joint I am interested in. It seems to be under tension due to maybe springs inside the joint, not sure. All I know is that if I swing my passenger door closed to hard the mirror makes a noise at the swivel joint as the inertia when the door closes causes the mirror housing to move slighty as if it were folding, but it then springs back into place. It probably only moves about 5 mm , but it's enough to be audible.

Have you had the this joint in pieces? Can it be tightened up perhaps from underneath. I see a plastic cover underneath , but don't know whats behind it.

Cheers

Iceman,

There are three screws underneath that black cover. I removed the cover and the screws and tried to take the mirror out, however the mirror is connected with the wire for heating the mirror and adjusting it.

You can try and take the screws out and see how you go, i would suspect that this isn't the cause of your rattling noise though.

Cheers for the update.

I was wondering if you could tell me if those three screw were adjustable? i.e can they be tightened up or were they loose when you took the cover off or quite tight? This is where my problem lies. There must be a spring behind those screws that keeps tension on the mirrors swivel joint. My joint is a bit loose as it moves when I shut the door.
