p0302 but light is not flashing
 

OK so I changed my spark plugs and coils a month ago and the wires are about one year old I got them from rotaryfx they were like 60. They were some blue wires but not OEM. I also have p0420 and I know I need to change the cat I ordered it yesterday from rx7store I got the rp super cat. My question is can my p0302 code be triggered by my bad cat? I drove my car today and when I came home I hooked up my obd scanner to see if it was still one code but unfortunately it said 4 #1po420 #p0420p/d #3p0302 #4 p0302 p/d. When I drive my car the check engine light never flashes. The car has 90000 miles. I don't want to take it to Mazda because I don't want to pay 200 just to listen tosome guy tell me iI need a new engine. It never sounds like its misfiring at idle and it starts fast hot or cold. I have gotten a misfire code after changing plugs the last two times. I got the code about two weeks after the change. If you clear it and it doesn't come back I wouldn't worry about it.

Thank you I cleared it right after I posted this up.and I'll check it after I drive my brother to school. Hopefully its not there anymore or if gets cleared with the new cat. I'm not so worried because the light never flashed and its running great. Fingers crossed

Yeah, mine flashed both times, and I was nervous. But I cleared and it nerver came back.....until I changed them again :lol2: and the second time I had changed plugs wires and coils.

If your cat gets bad enough you could damage your engine by driving your car. So just be aware of that, if you are replacing your cat anyway you might consider punching the honeycomb out until the replacement arrives if you have to drive it. As long as you don't notice the cat glowing or have trouble with reaching higher rpms it is probably fine for now though.

Update.
So my dad drove my car this morning and he said the check engine light was on when he turned it on and when he redlined it this morning the check engine flashed and went away. could that be a good sign? I hooked up my obd scanner again and this time it said p0302pd and po420pd. Could this misfire be caused by my new spark plugs and coils? I got them from autozone. Maybe i need some new spark plug wires. The ones i have now are about a year old but they might of went already since i only paid 70 for them.

Yeah about 2 months ago it wouldn't let me go past 6k rpm but I heard like a pop and ever since that my car has been driving great. I guess it the honeycomb thing on its own

The honeycomb can break on its own but it doesn't have far to go and ends up in your exhaust somewhere. It could clog up your muffler and create a similar issue for you. It is kind of hard to say what happened to it without checking. When you replace your cat you should definitely check the rest of your exhaust for cat pieces and remove them.

I guess it is possible for you to have got bad coils but the chances are kind of slim. You could try swapping your coils between the rear and front rotor and see if the misfire code changes places as well. You can get a good set of ngk wires on rockauto.com for very cheap, but the ones you bought from rotaryfx should be working fine.

I doubt the spark plugs are causing your problems as long as you got the right ones and put them in the right spots.

Omg now that I remember auto zone never asked if I needed leading or trailing and when my mechanic put the in I drought he checked because I watched him to it unless if they can tell the difference. I'll check all of this once I get my new cat put in

They may have already known what to give you if you asked for a set, hopefully. Trailing = Top and Leading = Lower, the plugs have an L and a T on them and the same thing can be found on the irons next to the plug holes so it should be pretty easy to check.

When I bought the spark plus I remembered I checked them all out and I remember they were all the same size so I'm almost positive the gave me 4 leading or trailing . My cat should be here the 15. Anyway thank you so much for your time you've been so helpful.

So my dad checked my spark plugs and they were all out of place. Auto zone game me the right plugs but my mechanic put them In wrong but I dont blame him since its only on rx8's. I ran the car and no more misfire and no more codes. I'll still put in my rp super cat and keep my old one for inspection time.

I wonder if there are any damages internally because the Leading Plug is longer by about 5 mm than the trailing Plug :dunno: At this time, since you are close to the end of your engine warranty, I would just bring it in to get a compression check and see how close you are to qualify for a reman-engine. That's just me though, unless you are confident that this current engine will last you another 25,000 miles.

Oh sorry I had no idea. My cars check engine light cut back on the next day but I cleared it and it hasn't came back. And how exactly do you reset the ESS profile
