Oil pressure

Hi I'm wondering what is normal oil pressure for the rx8. I have a prosport oil pressure gauge. When the engine is cold. i get about 18psi at idle. when it's warmed up i get about 15psi. One time i was up in the hills and drive hard. my oil temp was about 200f and at idle my oil pressure was reading 0psi. I'm using 5w-20 GTX, if that makes any differences.:tear:

Arca_ex 05-13-2012 03:35 AM

Maybe your gauge is toast because if you're getting 0PSI at idle then your engine wouldn't really be working too well now would it...

Sephitrask 05-13-2012 08:07 AM

I actually took my Prosport OPG off yesterday to send back under warranty because it stopped working. They may have had a bad batch or something

Idle sounds about right, under load mines usually around 70 area. Recently blew motor and I am having a few things done with the.e-shaft to get more oil. (Drilling more oil ports on the shaft where the bearings ride) this would only be benefited with a higher oil pressure regulator as well. After drilling it all needs to be rebalanced. A littlr of topic from your post but I'd that time ever comes something to think about.

How do you know if you got low oil pressure or high oil pressure?

HiFlite999 05-13-2012 01:29 PM

Read the "gauge" on the dash for starters. Read the post above yours (~15 - 70 psi). Zero psi means dead engine in 5 minutes.

Sephitrask 05-13-2012 03:20 PM

My first response is to say bad gauge, but more info is always good. Year, mileage, mods, etc. Oh and I am not going to get into a oil war here, but IMHO that weight oil is TERRIBLE for a rotary. Please for christ sake switch to something with better heat resiliency.

Everest^ 05-13-2012 05:02 PM

Car is stock with 95k miles. It has all the recalls done to it. I used 10w-40 once, but i was getting very very low MPG. that's why i switch back to 5w-20.

If you have to make a choice between protecting your engine or slightly improved fuel economy, you choose fuel economy...interesting.

Yeah I'm only 17 and i need to pay for gas sadly....

No worries, getting SLIGHTLY better gas mileage is cheaper than causing unnecessary damage to your motor right? :yelrotflm

Sooo sad.... Not. :hahano:

Learn to pay now and get over it. You sound like much of todays youth, ungrateful.

In my opinion, 5W-20 is perfectly fine. Oil technology marches on, just as it always has. The oils we used 20 or 30 years ago are not the oils we need or use today. Remember, the vast majority of RX-8 owners in this country use 5W-20 with no ill effects. (And remember that most RX-8 owners have never even heard the phrases "original engine" or "premix". Ever.) Members of RX8Club.com are not representative of all 8 owners. In fact, most car forums, including this one, serve as unofficial Complaint Departments, where owners with problems come in search of answers, or a shoulder to cry on. RX-8 owners without problems have little reason to find there way here; most have never even heard of this website.

with 10w-40 i get 120miles till 1/4tank. with 5w-20 i get about 160. I'm also changing my oil at 1k-1.5k miles. I use MMO in my gas at every pump. I'm get a compression test soon. If my motor is bad ima just sell it.

Z0oMzo0m 05-14-2012 04:14 AM

lol, jeeeze stop changing oil every 1k-1.5k, unless you track your car constantly... lol wow and your worried about a few extra bucks in gas... ive used 5w-20 in my car for 90k miles..

There are things that cannot be changed/improved. No matter how advance technology are.

10w40 = No bearing wear at 100K
5w20 = Bearing is all chew up WAY before 100K

5w20 = garbage.

Does the engine work? yes, but it's going out of balance and give more stress to the rest of the parts, that's all.

then you have a bigger problem. I have no problem getting 180 miles per tank in NYC piece of shit traffic. oil weight will effect mpg about 1-3% the most. I use 20w50.

Exactly. Yes, oil technology is improving all the time, but the work being done is to improve it in conventional engines. Another good example are fuel additives made to reduce engine buildup. Its great for valves but also does a good job of breaking up the oil on the housings that lubricate our apex seals. As we all should know, our cars require more knowledge to be kept up on properly, and it is common knowledge that due to the greater temperatures the rotary engine gets to, better oil is required, and Mazda only suggests the 5w_20 in north America to make the EPA happy. I also use 20w 50

Where's your facts? Have you proven this?

Z0oMzo0m 05-14-2012 07:34 PM

no most likely he cant, he is only going by what has been said. i used 5w20, i live in Florida. my motor went from no oil pressure from MY stupidity. i had 90k miles on my car, 2007 6pd, daily driven. never had starting issues, flooding, etc.. use what you want, as stated before probably half the people that drive rx8's don't use the forum and use 5w20 oil.

Everest^ 05-14-2012 08:01 PM

I wouldn't mind using 10w-40. When I bought the car it had 93k and all it's life it been running with 5w-20. Now it has 96k. Nothing is acting up. I'm just wondering what's up with my oil pressure readings on my prosport oil pressure gauge.

5w20 is so great that's probably why only USA gets this "special recommendation", oh yes, we have something called "EPA"

There are more than enough proofs on this forum, I even saw a few engines myself in person of "what are the effects of 5w20". Just because "nothing is acting up" does not mean your engine is running the way it should be. 3-4 years ago, my engine went from normal compression to utter failure in 9 months. it starts and drives fine. :) I had a good time with 5w20 before I switch over to 5w30 then 10w40, but too late I guess.

so far 10w40/15w50/20w50 has work really well. no issues so far :)

Prosport oil pressure gauge ? they are known to fail. I use nothing but Defi, but my friends (VTEC Y0!) been thru like 2-3 sets of Prosport and he bought Defi, couldn't be happier.

like I said, sure the engine works, but when you take it out, stuff inside will tell you otherwise. a worn out stationary/rotor bearing will cause catastrophic failures, but hey, what do I know ? You can use what you want, Florida? 5w20? HAH! good luck buddy.

I like this chart, reminds me of my Fc's manual. It's from Australia I believe.

I personally use 10w-40. Mpgs seem ok for city traffic.

I'm located at west coast lol. But okay. Is it too late to change to 10w-40 now? Even tho the motor had 93k with 5w-20 from previous owner? I probably got a crappy OPG. When the OPG was reading 0psi. My motor wasn't making any abnormal noises and the idiot oil pressure light on the cluster was reading normal.

Strange, I normally get 180miles to the 1/4 mark with 10w40. Maybe its time for a tune up?
