oil and more oil
Has anyone had any problems finding the correct oil for their RX8? My dealer still does not carry the correct weight of oil despite the supposedly factory trained mechanics and service?
:( |
what oil are we sposta use?
ive just been using 10 w30 mobil 1 ? |
5W 20
|
no wrong for your own sake stop 5w20 is what the oil cap and manual says, anything else may get gunked up (10W30 is thicker i believe), you risk damaging a lot of internal components in the long run with incorrect oil
|
5w 20 is the spec oil but it is not easy to find, unless you really really search...
|
God, don't you people read the manual?
Anyway, dauntless, I found 5W-20 in Walmart. I also bought a case of it online. Just do an Internet search if you can't find it locally. |
loco,
thanks for the post and will do that, last check with walmart was a no but will keep on, thanks again.. |
some good discussion about 5W 20...

I find it everywhere. I usually go ro Pep Boys or Aid Auto Stores.
|
I was able to find a case of Castrol GTX 5w20 at Pep Boys.
|
I thought you weren't supposed to use synthetic oil with rotary engines because the engine burns a little oil as a normal part of its operation and it can't do that with synthetic
|
As the CanadiaDriver article points out the 5-20 is primarily a trick mfgs. use to get slightly better fuel numbers. Dodge has stuck with 10-30 as they care more about engine life. For the RX8 a 5-20 would be better in cold ares as it will pump though out the engine faster when cold starting. WHen hot the 30 weight is probably better, but the difference would vary more by engine and oil temp than the weight of the oil. If you run real hard in Nevada with temps over 115 then the 30 or even 40 weight would be best.
Check what NASCAR or other racing groups use in their engines and you will be surprised with 50 & 70 weight engine oil to handle the high temps and loads. The rotary is much easier on oils than most engines. There are no blow by gases entering the crank case and hense less acid and other things building up in the oil. Chevy was planning on having the automatic trans and rotary engine useing the same oil system before they canceled the project (remember the Vega and the large transmission hump?) Mazda was really being conservative since the rotary has not been out in years and with a new customer base in requiring 7000 mile oil changes. |
Kragen/Schucks/Checkers, Autozone, Pep Boys, Napa Auto Parts, etc.etc.etc. Theres tons of em all over California to say the least, and I've never had a problem finding 5w20. Granted they might not have the specific brand of oil you're looking for, but they always have at least one brand available in 5w20.

I bought my 5-20 castrol gtx at auto zone.
If you use Synthetic motor oil in your car you will burn out your muffler bearing, J/K. If the book says it's bad Don't use it. |
found 5w-20 very easily at pepboys and at autozone... ::shrugs::
|
as you can see:
