Oil Metering Pump questuoin (TURBU GUYS CHIME IN)

i was wondering if any of the turbo guys out there have removed there OMP.

I am unsure how common it is on a rx8 to remove it or not. On both of my RX7 i removed them and premixed.

Thanks and any input greatly appreciated

The other option when removing the metering pump, is to install the Sohn adapter and a reserve oil tank. There is some discussion on the possibility of premixing causing the in-tank fuel filter to clog.

MAZDADIKE 12-29-2008 12:03 PM

yes i have heard that before about the fuel filter to clog, but with proper fuel filter is that likely??

is the maker of that adapter called sohn

Sohn:

What I do is:

premix + sohn + accessport with increased omp flow rates.

ZERO problems with premix clogging the OEM fuel pump. Tons of issues with the mazsport fuel pump that Scott blamed on premix, but it seems odd to me the OEM had no issues for 2 years and the Mazsport one magically had clogging within a few weeks, then had "clogging" issues due to premix even though I had quit premixing.

dannobre 12-29-2008 12:24 PM

Depending on the turbo position the adapter may or not fit...it makes the OMP stick out about 1/2" further...It doesn't fit on mine

Premixing with no OMP works well.....lots of race cars have been doing it for years

Razz1 12-29-2008 12:30 PM

With all the discussion of clogged fuel pumps............

I have not heard of one person using the Sohn adapter have fuel pump issues.

Makes you think it's the quality of gasoline in some parts of the country.

mysql 12-29-2008 12:31 PM

I use the sohn.

zero issues when talking about non mazsport pump though.

MAZDADIKE 12-29-2008 12:38 PM

i ran no OMP on both my RX7 since i have had them and no problems. maybe with a upgraded fuel filter this problem can be eliminted.

i like the Sohn because i dont like the idea of injecting dirty oil into motor and thats why I always went with premix..

there are a few high quality premix oils made specific for rotory motors.

is there a company that offers a block off plate or no.

mysql 12-29-2008 01:06 PM

I must be talking to the wall. There is no clog issue as far as I'm concerned.

your car will go into limp mode if the omp is missing afaik.

This has always been my theory for all the southern gentlemen with filter problems :)

Doesn't solve the other fuel problems though...cause I have them...with clean filters

I think the Sohn adapter is a great mod....using clean 2 stroke oil has to be better than the 4 stroke engine oil the stock system injects

How much better is the quantitative problem for some ;)

has anyone ever removed the filter filter and measured the exact size of the actual filter componet? I did and guess what it is................................................ .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..........
ok give up? It approx 4.5 cubic inches---thats all. 10 mic size.
We dirty gas folks (and now the ethanol situation strats also!) need to pay attention. oh by the way a 4.5 cubic inch filter is not very big for one that cant be changed or cleaned.
More and more are going for the omp removal.
I am installing --among other things-- an external filter next month.

I am on my 3rd gallon of premix and no problems yet.

I don't believe you on the first one.....Denny and others have had failures due to plugged filters.....

And the second is dead on..the car won't run without the OMP....It goes into instant limp mode and will barely go 10mph.......Doesn't mean it has to be pumping oil though...would be easy to put a blocking plate behind the pump and let it think it's doing something :)

Brettus 12-29-2008 01:29 PM

/\ or program it to inject practically nothing ;)

where?

beers

olddragger 12-29-2008 02:22 PM

Swoope--plan on involving Charlie on the install if possible.
omp removal defined---meant to say it has been disabled--not physically removed. So the engine is "fooled" and doesnt shut her down.
mysgl----every rx8 that i am aware of here in Ga that regualry tracks (2-3 x's a yr) has had fuel pump issues--appears to be the filter clogging causing reduced flow/pressure. Some have had problems on the street--but not as many.
Swoope i will take some NEW pics of some stuff i have left and e mail them to ya--pm me your e mail ok?

MAZDADIKE 12-29-2008 02:47 PM

alright. how much premix are you running while you have your OMP tricked??

wow,

i kill me. the question is where is the filter going? and which filter?

i talked to charlie day after xmas.. all is good. i chose the correct adult beverage! ;)

email is screen name at gmail.

yea. some big photos of the internal filter would be great.. btw. the microns on that filter for its size is silly. thanks for the work on that..

and i think if you come down for the rolex / koni. you have a place to stay semi close.. :)

btw, practice is jan 3, 4.

beers

olddragger 12-30-2008 11:00 AM

cool
placement will be probably driver front fenter area-- little after where the line start slanting upward. I am running out of room!
get the photos tonight.
i couldnt believe how small of a filter it actually measured out to be.
back to the omp issue--cars that disable it usually run anywhere from 1 oz a gal to 1 1/2 oz per gallon.

Are you removing the in-tank filter AND adding the external? How bad is the fuel (how dirty is it?) Will it mess up the pump in any way?

dannobre 01-11-2009 11:57 AM

You can do it a number of ways....

I removed my filter and screen...and put in an external filter....

You could leave the screen and remove the original filter and add an external filter....

Or you could leave the original filter and screen and add an external filter ( but this doesn;t help with the filter in the tank plugging up hypothesis)

olddragger 01-11-2009 06:10 PM

no screen? --boy yall do have clean gas!!
we have a 30 mic screen/sock--traded up for a 70 size.
i am even thinking about putting 14 volts to the pump during the high speed mode and leaving the low alone.

Pump really doesn't care about normal sized crap..

Injectors are the problem.....
