Oh no.. 1 week old and it clunks - Help

Uh oh, I think....

I just picked up my new titanium last week. Houston, we have a problem.

It only happens once a day (the first start after being in the garage over night.). When I back out of my garage and then put it in 1st gear, I hear a pretty loud clunk. After that, nothing. Car runs fine. Even in 1st gear start up at a red light. Any ideas? When I start, I don't have my AC/Fans/etc. on so I don't believe it's the compressor or anything like that.

Any ideas?

Thanks
KF

mine does it too and so did my Accord. I consider it normal.

Your car might explode. You should take it to a dealer immediately!

Just kidding. Actually what you're hearing is the ABS testing or something like that. All the RX-8's do it.

It's also described in the owner's manual -- you have read it, right? -- you can also find the quoted text by using this forum's search...

the clunk is the ABS's way of saying...we are here for you and we love you

Mikelikes2drive 05-12-2004 09:23 AM

to avoid that clunk a neat simple trick is to shift into second and then shift into first. Its a habit for me now, but my friends think im odd.

MyRxBad 05-12-2004 09:37 AM

It's either the ABS doing it's self check or the emer. brake sticking a little after being on all night.

MazdaManiac 05-12-2004 09:39 AM

If it happens beyond the very first time you put it in first when you are driving off, it isn't the ABS.

Mine has this to some extent also.

It appears the the clutch doesn't fully disengage when cold and the imput shaft "clunks" as it accepts first.

We will have to wait and see on whether or not that is a real issue.

Wow, that was fast for a lot of replies!! Thank you all. And although I didn't mention it, I DID do a search first and didn't see/find anything.

That's good to know that it's probably the ABS engaging. I kindof thought that could be it, but I wasn't sure..My stratus and durango do not seem to do this, but maybe it happens, just a lot quieter... Or could it be because their automatics vs. stick?

Anyway, thanks a lot guys/gals. At least I know that it's most likely normal. I'll keep an eye/ear on it just in case..

Thanks!
KF

did you search using clunk? clunk brings up several posts discussing both the abs self test clunk and the first gear clunk

That's what I thought I typed. Perhaps I had a typo and didn't notice. Anyway, I'm sorry. I didn't intend to clutter the forum with a repeat.

All these guys are searh nazis don't worry about them :D

sorry if that came across as harsh it was not my intention. you should read thru some of those to identify which clunk you are hearing. welcome:)

killerfish 05-12-2004 05:19 PM

no sweat. no offense taken. Thank you for the welcome and the advice!

You may have typed "chunk" or "fhunk" or "khunk" instead of clunk. Just kidding.

My old Honda has ABS and it doesn't have the clunk. Instead, it has a sound like a thousand clicks in succession. That was ancient ABS technology. Because your other cars are Chryslers, I'm assuming their ABS systems are a different kind and/or old (the Stratus is around '95, right?).

PhineasFellOff 05-13-2004 08:40 AM

Oh yeah, I'm curious why you didn't go for a Crossfire. They aren't selling well so it's definitely a buyer's market. Did you finally give up on Chrysler? If so, why?

killerfish 05-13-2004 09:56 AM

Thanks, that helps. My Stratus was actually '01, and the Durango is 1999. I didnt' give up on Crysler. Actually, both were great for/to me.

I just like the RX-8 so much it was a no brainer. Price/Looks/Kids in back/etc. Not to mention I get X/S-Plan pricing through my employer!

Thanks!
KF
