Oem?

I see OEM used alot on here and I was wondering what it stands for?:uhh:

Im also looking at having my plugs replaced and i see where alot of people suggest having the coils? replaced also. What about the leads also?

And for anyone that has had the plugs/coils replaced, what was the cost?

Thanks.

David

Original Equipment Manufacturer

Usually applies to the same parts as came on the car in the first place. Like if you had an accident and smashed the front bumper, you might say "Why replace it with OEM for $900, I'll just get an aftermarket for $50...."

The (OEM!) Mazda coils are weak, and misfire after a year or two, there are a couple of 'aftermarket', upgraded kinds you can replace them with. Always a good idea to put new wires on at the same time......

Mazda has redesigned the 'OEM' coils, I bought some of the new ones for about $40 each (you need 4) A set of nice wires should be about $100+, and of course, new plugs.

Spark plugs will run you about $85 for all four. I haven't purchased new coils yet but I think they're about $30 a pop. Unless your car is having trouble starting I wouldn't mess with the coils yet. Don't try and fix what isn't broken. Plugs however do wear out and need to be replaced. How many miles are on your car again?

The Original Equipment Manufacter is "OEM. Yes plugs, coils, wires are a good way to go. What year and mileage? It cost about $250 to $300 for the parts on here and about an hour or a little more for your first time(use the "DIY" section). The dealer would want two to three hundred for labor.

coils fail just as easily as plugs do on this car.

check all.

coils $120 for all 4
bhr msd ignition wires are $60
spark plugs are $80

$260 for getting your ignition up to snuff.

plugs can be had for about $80 for all 4. BHR also sells upgraded coils and wires and such.
as far as labor goes, do it yourself. theres a real nice DIY in the tech section. very easy to follow. if you arent entirely comfortable with that find someone local to help.
