Non ethylene glycol coolant?
advance auto only carries ethylene glycol based coolants. Is there a store that should have it in stock or do i have to special order it? Ma$da dealer$hip is out of the question.
I saw the NY guy on here say even fl22 has some ethelyn glycol. Is there an alternative to mazda coolant? like prestone extended life or something? |
Looks like Amazon carries FL22:

Why do you want to avoid ethylene glycol?
|
Are you thinking of 2-EHA? That's a completely different chemical.
|
You can get PEAK Global formula if you are unable to source Mazda FL-22 pre-diluted (or Ford Motorcraft VC-10-A2 concentrate), it is available at most auto parts stores. The big concern is the presence of 2-EHA as UnknownJinX pointed out.

Now that we know how AF can ruin coolant seals, why would anyone put anything but FL22 in car.
You can nearly mix any kind of engine oil, but wrong coolant is very bad. |
Some race tracks and sanctioning bodies ban ethylene glycol so there is a certain case where avoiding it is reasonable. In that case you'd just run DI water with a corrosion inhibitor or something crazy like Evans NPG Waterless.
But if this is a street driven car, just pay for the FL22. Should be $20-30 a gallon and you'll need 2-3 gallons. It's not that expensive when you realize that you don't have to change the coolant very often. |
Yeah, the track safety is a reason.
I bought new 73 RX3, and water seals went out by 75k miles, and they gave a new engine for approx $175. installation cost. I drove it pretty hard, and 110 mph on open hwy a lot. Not sure any AF back then was safe for seals, but now we know FL22 is the one. |

I mentioned this idea elsewhere: I know Honda excludes 2-EHA from their coolant. Maybe Honda coolant is cheaper? Just a thought. |
