My wife noticed the fuel odor ONLY when I would fill up the 2004 car. I pulled the rear cushion up and there was wet gas which technically could drip and cause a fire. Temp solution is do not fill to top and simply keep 1/2 a tank. If codes are thrown due to pressure loss on system could be?

I took a shot since parts aren't available yet and mine was repaired years ago sending them my form and copy of Dealer repair bill for $500 (no pump either just testing and seals) in the hopes they will just reimburse me. The only thing they didn't do was the insulation thingie. Worth a shot anyhow. If you don't smell gas or see it when full doubt you have an issue yet.

Good luck.

At least they're not issuing a caulking gun, one tube of silicone sealant, and two cans of GreatStuff for insulation to every owner.

Took my RX-8 in today for the initial inspection, and no issues. 205K miles.

I got my letter last week, and it says a half hour to do the inspection of the fuel pump rings but two hours or more to do the repair. When I called to make an appointment for the inspection, they said I had to leave the car overnight, no exception. They always provide a loaner, so no biggie.

I called back to say, why come in for the inspection if you don't have the parts, doesn't it make more sense to wait until you get the parts so that if the inspection shows I need the repair you can do it all in one trip instead of me doing two trips. She said yes, but "there is no ETA on when the parts will come in."

I have a 2006 Sport, 120,000 miles (second engine), and I'm thinking if anyone's got deteriorated insulation, it's those of us with high mileage. ?? So I'm not waiting for the parts; I'm going in on the 23rd for the inspection, and if there's something to be concerned about, I won't be driving my 8 until the parts are in, as in not only in the dealership but in my car! I'm not interested in being barbecued a few months before my daughter's wedding. :-D (Before you all jump on me for being dramatic, I KNOW! It's exaggeration for effect! haha)

From what I gathered from the letter, they want to inspect your ring for damage.
If it's cracked, they may have parts in stock to take care of it.
I think they have available parts for those needing immediate repair.
I believe they don't want to use up their limited supply on unnecessary replacements.

I got my notice yesterday so I called about it. He ordered the parts and is going to call when they get in so I can get an appt and have it all replaced. He estimated in about a week. So Im assuming they are intending on replacing?? Im going to fuss about it if not, lol.

Talked with my dealer's service manager and they suggest waiting till they get the parts in and then they will have me come in. I have no gas smell or leaks, so I can wait for the parts. This is an overdue recall, but at least they are doing it before we catch fire.

FYI the seats pop right out. That is not another hour of work to remove the seats.

Even $400,000 to $4 million dollar cars can have dangerous gas leaks that could lead to fire.

You really lucked out with this recall. My tank fittings went out two years before my fuel pump started acting up so can only send in one $500 bill for the recall fittings. Awaiting reimbursement but not holding my breathe on that either.

I wonder if they would comp the labor to replace the pump while doing the recall? I've got 155K on original pump. 40k miles or so on my reman. The pump assemblies are reasonable from Mazdaspeed. I need to get this done along with the airbag fix.

Hold off on the fuel pump recall...

Soooo... I took my RX-8 to the dealership to get the two air bag recalls done and I knew about the fuel pump recall, but I also knew it wasn't quite ready so I didn't ask for that to be done. With the great customer service at my local dealer, they decided to tack that recall onto my visit as well because why not, right? Well turns out my fuel pump didn't pass their inspection, however, what they found wasn't completely covered by the recall but they're going to cover the whole process anyways (which is awesome). What's not so awesome is that they have to replace the entire fuel pump which just so happens to be on national backorder. Oh and they also can't give me my baby back because it's dangerous and they would be liable. It's been almost a week and two different loaner cars... (One of which was an awesome CX-5 and the most recent being a sub-par base model Mazda3, yuck. If this goes on much longer they better have an MX-5 ready for me.) I don't recommend bringing in your 8's yet, fellas.

They did the same for me - 2 weeks+ to replace a failed airbag seat sensor on my S2 - $4500 worth of work. Once had to be assembled and shipped and they wouldn't let me take me car home - Jeep Wrangler as rental (not too shabby).

I wish I got a Wrangler, I'm stuck with this 150hp Mazda3. They have my sports car, the least they could do is give me something equal...
