New RX8 Recall ---- Fuel Tank Cap Repairs

?MAZDA?RX-8?????????????????

It basically saids due to heat and fuel tank cap material(read: CHEAP!) the fuel tank cap cracks(on it's own), fuel might spill everywhere (oh trust me I seen it) create a hazardous condition.

All rx8 owners will get a new updated fuel tank cap and extra insulation free of charge.

Updated : Yes, it applies to all S1 RX-8, might include S2 1 day, who knows, just like Airbag recall, yeah yeah I know s2 tank design is a diff, whatever.

Different

This time they just gonna replace the tank with new, updated model, and it has extra insulation more than the ones we had earlier.

And its recalling all s1 rx8, not just the earlier ones

I have two 8's registered with Mazda. I'll keep you guys posted when I get the letter. Mazda is always good about sending me letters with recall info.

Will they take all the old bits (fuel pump, sensors etc.) and stick them on the new tank? I was going to change the pump, maybe I should wait???

I took the time to run the recall website through Google Translate.

The Japanese recall and the MNAO 0516J look the same. Nowhere in the translation does it mention a new fuel tank. It looks like they are just going to replace the pump rings and add some insulation.

You beat me to it! Just ran the same goog translate. You're right. Pump rings. Maybe I should wait to change the pump. Unless they decide all those old parts are hazardous, and swap them out...

Fuel tank will NOT be replaced…

As mentioned above, the fuel tank will receive a thermal insulation pad, and the fuel pump ring set will be replaced. Mods, if you're out there, might be smart to change the title of this thread to better reflect the facts.

https://www.mazdausa.com/owners/recalls

"The repair will be to replace the fuel pump ring set with a new one and add a thermal insulation pad to the fuel tank. The repair will be performed free of charge to vehicle owners. Mazda will conduct the field action for this recall campaign in two phases: (1) First, Mazda will notify all vehicle owners that a recall campaign will be conducted, and (2) secondly, vehicle owners will be re-notified to have the repair performed when repair parts are available."

Looks like the recall will replace both pump rings, the main pump ring and the sub-pump ring in second half of the saddle tank. Adding greater insulation to the entire tank has always been needed. I am convinced this lack of sufficient insulation and subsequent heat transfer into the tank (with the hot exhaust running right between the fuel tank halves) has helped deteriorate many a fuel pump before its time.

I had a fuel pump failure in my 2008 40th Anniversary Edition's past, and back then replaced my series 1 pump with a series 2 fuel pump assembly. No further problems, but the Mazda fixes will be welcome.

My super tech (We call him the Mazmart Stig) is discussing this recall with Mazda as he is still currently employed at a dealer as a certified Master Technician who does RX-8 work every week and often every day. We have identified other common fuel leak issues and not seen O ring failure. Mazda is communicating on the topic and thankful for the input.

I have seen couple Rx-8 with the exact failure (cap cracked on it's own) and fuel spilled everywhere in Hong Kong.

so I guess this is a fairly common issue.

Well, At least you guys in the states got Mazda covered, in Hong Kong ... they don't give a ****, so far they only admit the airbag recall cuz it's so damn widespread ... and nothing else.

they don't even honor the lower A arm recall here , sucks.

I updated the title myself (lazy mods LOL) , I dunno why I left the cap part out ... whatever, it's updated.

I had this done over two years ago on my 04 at my own expense when I noticed gas odor upon every fill up only. I'll show them my receipt and see if I can get reimbursed for the fix when I get the recall notice. The insulation might be a good idea? I replaced my fuel pump at 10 years old so they must be pretty good. The new full pump assy I got from Mazdaspeed was really impressive drop in unit at a great price.

Update 10/10/17
***So I had my 3 year old fuel pump replaced for free under the 2nd recall. I submitted my receipts for the cost of the previous fuel pump and the $100 a private garage to install. It came to $471.70 and I just got a check from Mazda to cover my costs for that. So I am totally impressed with Mazda for reimbursing me a total of nearly $900 for the two fuel system repairs I had to pay for out of pocket. No one honors repairs on a car that's 14 years old!!

Dang. I Bought my RX8 at the end of Oct. Replaced the fuel pump two days later due to a crack in the housing.

Just got my recall notice yesterday (Jan 09 2017) in the mail from Mazda. It says to come in as soon as possible to have it checked for cracks, but they won't have actual parts until later, so wait for a second letter to notify me when they get 'em. Mine is 2006 base model manual. 96,000 miles and no issues with the fuel ring so far.

These rings must be accessible from under the rear seats, right? The letter said 30 mins for the replacement of parts...no way are they dropping the exhaust, drive shaft, tank in that time!

Correct, left rear cushion pops out, 3 screws hold a cover.
Be sure you don't have a full tank when you drop it off, quite a bit will spill out.

Got my letter from Mazda today for my 2008 40th Anniversary edition RX8. Yes they access the fuel pump rings from under the rear seat covers. The fuel tank insulation will be replaced from underneath the car.

Could this possibly cause a p0456 and p0441 code? Would you smell gas in the interior cabin if you had a leak?
