new oem engine from mazda

has anyone purchase a new (not reman) oem short block from mazda motorsports part # N3Y1-02-200. what does it consist of. does it come with oil pan, front cover, water pump ect.

Hi. In 2013 I purchased a "short engine" part number N3H102200 from the local agent. It arrived in NZ after about four weeks. Being for a manual car, the unit was complete from front pulley (and water pump) to flywheel. I had to transfer over my injectors, manifolds, and alternator. It had the oil pan, front cover. From memory I might have had to transfer over some sensors, but some were already fitted. I may have photos of the unit in its cardboard crate. AJ

looks like the two reply above are N3H which are remanufacture, not brand new oem?

My Mazda S1 reman diary:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tec...enesis-267220/

I don't know about N3Y1-02-200 but N3H3-02-200R-V0 (S1 motor) came as a fully assembled short block with oil pan, flywheel, water pump, oil level sender, and e-shaft pulley. Included in the crate was a complete gasket set, thermostat, and a bunch of info/warning tags for common gotchas (like resetting the e-shaft profile).

All series 1 motors are remanufactured. There are no "new" motors. That said, according to Paul at Mazmart, S1 reman motors almost always have new housings and such.

Edit:
Based on a comment I left 2 years ago, I called the parts department at Jim Ellis Mazda and they said that the functional difference between N3Y1 and N3H3 is zero. N3Y1 comes with an "anti-theft label" but I have no idea what that means or why it costs $2k more than N3H3.

are you sure there are no new s1 engines? according to the shop where i was looking to have my motor built. they have a brand new (not reman) oem s1 engine. also on mazda motorsports site, i see three different short block option, $2500 (i assume reman), $3350 w/o anti thief label and $3750 with anti thief label. i assume the $3750 is a new oem, not reman.

NotAPreppie 07-25-2018 09:43 AM

The $2500 option from Mazda Motorsports is a reman (I spoke to them directly). Also, they can't accept cores so add another $1000 on top of that price. They couldn't really explain what the $3750 option was when I spoke to them (2-ish years ago). Maybe give them a call and ask.

Again, remans contain a large percentage of new parts (maybe as high as 90%) so I'd bet a lot of people just call them "new". But, technically, they are remans.

As far as I'm aware, the only new engines in the US came installed in cars (and possibly the first few replacements). Mazda have been pumping remans out of their US facility for several years now and prior to that they had Caterpillar building them (very poorly).

trackjunkie 07-25-2018 02:20 PM

i just called mazda motorsport. there's a back order of at least 30 days on engines, they are waiting on some parts to complete the engine assembly in japan. and the reman engines will no longer be available. only new engines assembled in japan will be available. the option with anti thief label will also go away since that was to match engine serial number to the chassis for dealership warranty. there will only be two options for brand new motors, auto or manual. the engine will be complete long block from crank pulley to fly wheel with oil pan.

BigCajun 07-25-2018 03:22 PM

That's very interesting.
I will be looking forward to more updates, thanks.
:)

GeicoGecko 07-25-2018 04:35 PM

What does that mean for pricing?

NotAPreppie 07-25-2018 05:02 PM

Fascinating.

BigCajun 07-25-2018 05:05 PM

If it's true they'll stop producing remans, then I assume the new replacements will be substantially higher.
I wonder when that will take effect?

Jedi54 07-25-2018 05:09 PM

BC: this could simply be a change for engines ordered through the motorsports program.
I imagine dealer networks will still routinely order remans when needed.

Thanks Jedi.
I saw the motorsports, but I didn't know it would be different.

In that case, does anyone know if it's an option for DD stock 8s?

trackjunkie 07-26-2018 07:01 AM

yeah this is a change in to the motorsport program. not sure if it will effect how dealership gets their engines.

NotAPreppie 07-26-2018 07:08 AM

It seems like nothing has changed in the Revolution Parts ecommerce channel since people are still getting their reman engines and I haven't seen any of the e-tailers listing N3H3-02-200R-V0 as NLA.

furansu 07-29-2018 12:50 AM

I ordered N3H3-02-200R-V0 after speaking with MazMart and seeing NAP's positive experience. The container for my engine specified 'Remanufactured', however the typical 'Mazda Remanufactured Engine' blue label was absent from the front cover. All hard parts appear to be new, except for the included crank pulley. NAP, did your motor have the blue tag? I was able to see the corner of the rotors through the intake ports and they look new as well, supporting MazMart and NAP's assertations.

My FD reman was labelled (an April 1998 engine), as was the engine my RX-8 came with, though I don't know for sure what year it was assembled/replaced as the tag is marked 11/24; likely meaning November 24th of an unknown year.

NotAPreppie 07-29-2018 10:20 AM

Okay, that's interesting... No blue reman tag.

furansu 07-29-2018 03:12 PM

I have had 3 engines in my garage in the last month. The new-reman I purchased and am preparing to install, the reman of unknown age (only marked 11/24 on the reman tag) that came out of my engine, and a known-bad original engine (rotor crashed into housing and pinched the apex seals) that I purchased from another owner to use as a core exchange.

Seems like everything was new on my new-reman motor from what I could tell, except:
-E-Shaft pulleys
-Tension bolts
-Some of the nuts for the waterpump
-The engine lift brackets (both were dirty and bent)

Other oddities about my new engine, unsure if i means anything; I'd be interested to see if it matches NAP's experience.
-No reman tag on front cover, or anywhere else
-Markings on rotor housings (3 orange dots in Exh. P-Port pockets and an ID number ink stamped by the spark plugs, in addition to the engraved QR and serial numbers)
-Front cover design differed from both of the other engines I had (CAS pocket fully enclosed the CAS sensor and was significantly thicker than the previous engine.
-Lower intake manifold studs (2) appear to be slightly different from both previous engines I had as the nuts do not want to thread on -- all other hardware for intake and other parts has been compatible.

Yes, it does. According to the dealer, it was the last reman available in the Chicago warehouse. Shortly after that, the thread about the reman back order popped up.

I'm beginning to think Mazda quietly shut down the US reman plant and is importing them from Japan.

I also think the distinction between "new" and "reman" is a little fuzzy since recent remans have had a significant portion of new parts.

BigCajun 07-30-2018 07:40 AM

I hope they don't sandbag us and announce they'll be selling only 'new' engines at a higher price.

infiltr_eight 07-31-2018 02:36 AM

Mine was new from Japan ... not remanufactured.

Yep spot on...
Japan made engines are not Re-mans and never have been.
Easiest way to tell a Japan made engine is Japan uses that thin 'cardboard colour' masking tape to cover intake/exhaust and other holes in all engines.
It is a different tape to what MNAO used.
My local Parts Manager in large Dealership (the one I trained) said there are no complete engines coming out of Japan once Stocks are exhausted, yes individual parts will still be available but not short blocks, Japan shut down it's RE assembly production line.
Yes they made a large batch as Parts Stocks, but I think you will find it difficult, same applies for Transmission and Diff assemblies.

Does the tape you're referring to match the tape that came on my reman?
