New cars with pre-L PCM firmware?

I was under the impression that all cars sold would definitely have the latest, greatest PCM code version at the time of sale. It really doesn't make sense for Mazda to do it any other way, unless there are parts changes which go along with the reflash. However, I just tried the "press brake 20 times in 8 seconds w/ ignition ON" test and...no movement from the oil pressure gauge. So, either my 2.5 week old car has the K flash or something even older, or I screwed up the brake tap procedure (which seems simple enough but you never know).

it shouldnt suprise you. unless you made a fuss before you signed it is the same old dealer indifference.

i would check your vin # against all the tsbs here.

i will bet you need the airbag recall also.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm taking it in next week for them to install the appearance package that they owe me then anyway.

Thanks,

The recall's should be done, call your dealer's service writer, give him your VIN # and tell him to run the number for recall's. The airbag recall was a "STOP DELIVERY" recall and was mandatory be completed before dealers could deliver the car.

That said, I picked my 8 up on May 3rd...it did not have the L or M flash (Nov, 2003 manf date). I got a CEL 2 miles from the dealer as I was driving away (Cat efficiency warning) and had it flashed the next afternoon. They should still be very responsive, you haven't gotten your dealer evaluation yet ;)

Indeed it may not be M-flashed, but I believe you have to tap the brake a few more times than 20 to get the needle sweep with the M version. I think mine did the sweep on the 22 or 23 tap.

The last time I tried it I know I went beyond 20, not sure how far beyond.

Good point about the dealer evaluation. If they give me any trouble I'll bring that up!

i purchased my 8 a week ago (built 1/04) and did not have the lastest flash . so i got it flashed today and so the new 8's are not flashed unless you make a point of it . they where nice and said i could get it flashed as often as i like at no charge.

Mine weren't. To be fair, the dealer I just bought the car from was told the recalls were done (by the dealer they got the car from).

The flash also didn't pass the brake/gauge test. To be honest, I thought you guys were nuts, lol... I mean, how would mashing the brake pedal 20 times do anything?

So I had the airbag recall and M flash done this morning.

And now I just tried the brake test again... and I'll be damned, the oil gauge swept over.

You kids really know your stuff :)

the newest Service bulletin released from Mazda today should take care of getting all dealer stock and customers cars updated to at least M pcm level. it is called a Mazda Special Program- msp04 and the bulletin number is 01-022/04. Now when any customer comes in for service and they enter your VIN it will show that this work needs to be done. Kinda like when a recall is done. No one should have to do any convincing of the service guys from now on. i am trying to link it here. can't post a pdf so will try it converted to word.
