MSP16 Flash, what can i expect
I just had my 2004 GT with 28K on it flashed with the MSP 16 upgrade. before the MSP16 the mazda dealer said it was still at the original flash from when it was sold in late 2003.
What can i expect from this "Upgrade"? I have only driven it about 1/4 tank since the flash and i am not able to do much spirited driving due to the rain and snow. I did not notice any differences in how it runss so far. I am hoping for a little better milage as i am getting about 18 on the freeway. |
MAZDA SPECIAL PROGRAM (MSP16) - ENGINE LACK OF POWER - PCM REFLASH
Bulletin No: 01-013/08 Last Issued: 03/14/2008 Service Bulletin Mazda North American Operations Irvine, CA 92618-2922 2004-2008 RX-8 - MAZDA SPECIAL PROGRAM (MSP16) - ENGINE LACK OF POWER - PCM REFLASH APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS 2004-2008 RX-8 vehicles, produced from April 10, 2003 through November 9, 2007 • VIN Range: JM1 FE17** 40100053 - 80215462 DESCRIPTION Some 2004-2008 RX-8 vehicles may experience a lack of engine power and/or low/rough engine idle speed in high ambient temperatures. A revised PCM calibration is available which increases metering oil lubrication amount during engine start and changes ignition timing control during high ambient air temperature conditions. It won't effect your mileage at all. |
Are you the original owner?
|
I am the second owner.
I had read the bulletin and was wondwring if it just related to the latest upgrade from M or P flash or whatever. Since mine had never been flashed it thought i would be getting all the new features? Higher OMP flows, Air Fuel map changes, Fan temp turn on. In reading the Flash update thread some people stated they had an increase in milage from the M flash. |
if your car has never been flashed then you will get
- different map for better hot-start or high(er) ambient temperature - slightly higher OMP rate - slight change to the spark plug firing order and time - protection against excessive stand-still idling that's all I can remember right now. oh, there is no fan temp on change as far as I know. |
Anyway to know if your car has the latest flash? Bought mine used at 30,000 miles, or should I just take it in and have them check it?
|
^ There should be a MSP16 "campaign" sticker under the hood if it was performed, but any dealer can look it up given your VIN.
|
call your local dealership up is the FASTEST way.
I never had that sticker or any sticker, heatshield recall, 4206F, MSP16. nope, nothing, no sticker :( WHERE IS MY STICKER!? I WANT A REFUND ! |
Mazda ran out of the stickers and some cars never got one even tho the service was performed. The service records should show if you have had the recall performed on the car.
|
Alright, i'll call up the local dealership and have them run the VIN when I get back to her this week.. thanks!
|
worse fuel mileage.
|
I did not get a sticker when i had the MSP 16 completed 2 weeks ago. I have not had a chance the complete a highway tank of gas yet to see i there is a increase or decrease in milage. should be heading to the bay area in 2 weeks and i will check.
|
Alright, well I am not sure which flash I am on, but I am getting roughly 16 mpg. But fuel isnt a problem for me, I just fuel up and drive off, don't stress too much about it. But I will see which flash I have in the upcoming week
|
If you take the car into a Mazda dealer for service, they should note what calibration the EMU is at and upgrade it to the current spec. You don't have to ask for this to be performed. The Mazda test machine will inform the tech that your car needs it.
|
^ With that though, when I got the vehicle it was owned by an elderly couple, and had 30,000 miles.. Now it's at roughly 35,xxx I did all the labor work myself, so I really never took it into them for any repairs or anything (since I am out of warranty anyway for normal maintanence...right?)
|
My 8 has 28K on it, just purchased it from the original owner with 27K. I was serviced at the Mazda dealer for its original 27K life (i have the reciepts). Yet it never got the MSP 16 update. So there is at least 1 point of data that the dealer does not do this automatically. I am sure it varrys from dealer to dealer.
|
MSP16 was/is a "Mazda Special Program" and as such was obviously missed by a number of dealers. 4206F was "voluntary; emissions" and as such may also have been missed.
Mazda is pretty good about entering what ECU 'flash' is actually current on the vehicle tho', so again just have them check the computer and if necessary have these installed. |
Should i complete the KAM (20 brake pedal) re-set after having the MSP 16 ?
|
Don't know why you would need to do so at all.....so I say......"No".

My dealer did not do MSP16 automatically, but when I asked about it they checked and did it on the spot. No sticker - this dealer doesn't seem to have them. But it's all documented in their system.
I did not notice any change in how the car ran. After 4206f I did notice that it started after a couple of turns, rather than immediately. That's part of the anti-flooding fix in that update. Ken |
I am going to resurrect this thread instead of starting a new one....
I am buying a 2007 RX8, pending a satisfactory compression test. The car is going in monday morning for the test. I had a copy of the warranty history report printed for me today and the MSP16 flash is still 'OPEN'. My question is; should I have it done while it is atbthe dealer for the compression check? The reason I ask is because, according to the owner (original) the car runs perfect. The car has been to the dealer for every oil change since new, (8 oil changes in 18k miles!). So, is this a case of, "if it ain't broke don't fix it", or should I have the MSP16 flash performed? I appreciate the input/advice/comments/etc. Thanks a bunch. |
i think you'll find that its already up to date. you should make sure it is definitely. but more than likely it was taken care of during a later recall and they just skipped closing the earlier program.
|
hey guys, first post here. sorry for resurrecting this thread, figured it'd be better to keep this question in an already existing thread than to start a new one.
i recently purchased an 05 manual rx8 with 125k miles. does the info in this thread still apply? i can call any mazda dealership and they'll be able to tell me if my rx8 had the flash? will it cost money for them to do it or is there anything i should present to them showing that it shouldn't cost money in the event that they try to charge me? thanks! |
