Most Upgraded Starter

Hey guys, do any of you know what the part number is for the most upgraded starter on our 8's? I have a 2006 GT Auto, and I'm looking to buy the most upgraded starter for it. I don't know where to start looking, I'm certainly not buying it from the dealer.

didn't realise there were degrees of upgradedness for our starters ....

Pretty sure there isn't an upgraded starter for the auto anyway (just the MT)

DillonTaylor300 11-26-2012 01:59 PM

Yeah...... all of them have been upgraded, lol. Originals were N3H1, upgraded to N3H1 A, upgraded to N3Z1, upgraded to N3H1-18-400R-0A

Look at mazmart and online mazda parts.

nycgps 11-26-2012 08:24 PM

Skip Bosch, they sell old starters regradless of year.

then, go get whatever from 2007+ will get u the faster version

to be sure, The kw rating will be different. faster model will be higher (different teeth too)

DillonTaylor300 11-26-2012 08:53 PM

Oh yeah I know, I've checked online and I still can't find anything. Mine has it's original starter, and it's 2kw, but it's still the slow version.

Have you tried the service/parts manager at your local Mazda dealer..I'm sure if it exists..they should have a part number for it...just a suggestion

DillonTaylor300 11-27-2012 12:39 AM

Yep, all they had were remans

New ones are no longer available.

There is nothing wrong with a Reman as long as it works. Some company does reman better than the others.

Keep in mind some brands (like Autozone) offers a lifetime warranty, but lifetime warranty doesn't mean shit, what you want is a quality starter, not a starter that has a lifetime warranty but u have to replace it every 3 months because it keeps on failing.

OP...

For the Manuals the S2 OE Starter is the latest and spins the fastest at Ring Gear/Flywheel it has 14 tooth Gear.

The upgraded (2005 MY) S1 Starters went from an 11 tooth to a 13 tooth Drive Sprocket, for Manuals.

Now I can't confirm , but I think the S2 Auto's had a similar/same change, the Part Numbers are different to S1 Auto.

Since you have an S1 Auto, I can't confirm the updated Auto Trans S2 Starter will fit OK in S1 Auto, like the Manual S2 will/does in a S1 Manual....

Now you might still find that MNAO Parts has some Brand New Genuine OEM S2 Auto Starters and Not Re-mans as S2 Auto Starters are not known to give issues....
even though MNAO are using a Re-man Part Number for supply, you might just find the S2 Auto Starter inside the box is OEM and not a re-man?..

You will have to get a Dealer to check with stocks.

N3H2-18-400B is the S1 Auto Starter (upgraded), N3H2-18-400 R0B is the re-man part number.
N3R3-18-400 is the S2 Auto Starter, N3R3-18-400 R00 is the reman part number.

I am pretty sure the S1 Auto Starters (N3H2) are now all re-mans...no OEM's...like the S1 Manual.

sometimes all the old starter needs is a good cleaning out.........

that is true and that's why I kept my old starter

S2 Starter is a direct bolt-in with a S1 correct?

Yes, for manuals (stick), there have been one or two here who have done so.
Can't confirm with Auto's..I think it should.

I had TSB 05-007/08 done to my 2006 6 speed automatic. It involves replacing the torque converter with an updated design and also a new starter, which the dealer told me was from the S2 automatics. The part number is N3R2-18-400. All I know is that with the new starter, the engine starts very quickly. Not sure if there is an even newer part number than that.

in Mazda's case, the Reman is done by Mitsubishi which is the manufacturer. they actually do a good job.

ASH8 12-02-2012 12:29 PM

N3R2-18-400 is NOT a Re-man..

As yet Mazda (NAO) do not list/sell an S2 Auto Re-man Starter

Mazda Parts - Online Mazda Parts

Note NO 'Core' Charge for S2 Auto Starter.

They do for S2 Manuals, and all S1's...All US remans have ''R00'' at end of OE Part Number.

S2 manual..note the R00 and note the $75.00 Core charge.

Autozone

2kW reman for 2006 -2008 Auto for $130 + $35 CORE

2kW reman for 2009+ Auto for $180 + $35 CORE

Different part numbers so likely not interchangeable

2004-2005 Auto is another different part number and also not 2kW $115 + $55 CORE

the upgraded 2kW starter weighs about 2.5 lbs more than the earlier models
.

Do you think the starter from Autozone will be faster than my stock starter?

nycgps 12-03-2012 10:34 AM

anything new will start better(read: FASTER) than your old, worn out one.

DillonTaylor300 12-20-2012 09:37 PM

Thanks for all the info guys, just purchased a 2kw starter from AutoZone, will let you know how things turn out when it gets here and I install it.

olddragger,

How would one (such as myself ;)) go about "properly" cleaning a starter? Thanks in advance.
