Mazda should give free throttle body service to all owners

I'm on my second engine right now, and was told that the carbon build up looked pretty bad already, with only about 10,000 miles on this engine. This is pretty ridiculous to me, and I had to get the throttle body serviced to clean out the carbon.

If this is all it takes to get the engines to survive, Mazda should have had its service departments doing these types of cleanings regularly at every oil change instead of allowing every 8 owners' engines crap out. Wouldn't you agree?

I moved again and do not have a long commute anymore, so I generally can't redline the car like I was doing on the highway. Don't like revving it in regular traffic anymore as if its a Ferrari cause thats just humiliating after 8 years of owning this car.

I'm for it, count me in. Never had my engine replaced yet, but this is a great idea.

throttle body rarely fail, i was one of the unlucky one. But i got it replaced when i still had my warranty. Carbon removal service? Hmm, sounds like another dealership bs. My throttle body is clean, and yes it has been more than 10k miles on it.

Wingznut 10-22-2011 02:46 AM

How exactly are you corrolating a dirty throttle body with engine failure? There's no relation.

Arca_ex 10-22-2011 03:23 AM

What I'd like to know is how your throttle body is getting carbon buildup on it... must be a pretty special engine if it's magically spitting junk back up the intake manifold...

Mine's never been off the car and it's at over 80k miles and there's nothing on it.

Manic Mechanic 10-22-2011 04:29 AM

47,000 on mine and as clean as a whistle.

Spin9k 10-22-2011 04:44 AM

It is ridiculous...only air passes thru the TB, how does it get carbon? (only way to get carbon produced would seem to be as a product of combustion, no?). Well, ok, perhaps a bit of blowby oil residue goes thru there, but still... carbon? Would seem stealership is offering to clean BS... and your wallet..., not carbon.

Well what they actually performed was induction service and an injector flush to clean out the supposed carbon build up over the past year. I just called it throttle body service for short but guess I should have been more specific. You guys are right though...it's possible the service advisor was just being a crook, but I still think Mazda should have made these carbon clearing services complimentary for RX-8s given all the engine problems that result from not driving the 8 everyday like you stole it.

Bladecutter 10-22-2011 04:27 PM

Sounds like you got a wallet flush.

The only thing in the intake stream that builds up any carbon is the SSV valve, and you have to MANUALLY remove the SSV from the car, and clean it by hand to get it clean.

There really isn't anyplace else in the intake tract where carbon builds up in any actual amount.

If your fuel injectors are getting clogged up, then that's on your gas company for making crap, and on you for buying it. Plus, a bottle of Techron Fuel system cleaner once an oil change interval will keep them cleaner for a lot less $$ than your dealer performed "Induction Wallet Flush".

BC.

they should give free oil changes for the life of the vehicle too!

oh my god you got hit, HARD.

injector flush? the ONLY freaking way to properly clean an injector is to take it out and have it flush by a injector specialist, it cost 25 bux each and they even tell you the flow map of the injector. I have a feeling what they did was bought a bottle of injector cleaner that cost like 5 bux which doesn't do shit, pour it into ur gas tank and charge you 50 or some shit ... or was it more ?

induction services ... rofl.

Yup, they did that service to my car right after the new engine was put in. All I know is the car wouldn't idle before the service (it'd rev up and down then stall), and idled fine after the service.

I think Mazda dealers use the products from BG: http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html
They charge a premium to do this service though.
I heard only good things about the BG products.
