Mazda oil change(RX8)

heres the problem....I was driving my rx-8 and the low level oil light came on and its been like that for a couple days and my ride doesnt feel as smooth when im braking or accelerating, I have an appointment for my oil change on wednesday so im not gonna touch my car until i bring it there. If i get the oil change will all the smoothness come back?

Are you serious? Put some damn oil in it now.

Racer X-8 01-29-2005 01:20 AM

Yeah, it needs oil. If you don't know how to check your oil level and top it up, find somebody who is comfortable in doing this and have that person do it BEFORE you even start it again! Take notes. You must learn how to do that yourself. It requires no tools nor expertise. You just gotta do it. And with this car, you gotta do it more often than other cars because it uses oil differently, so the oil level will indeed go down, slowly. When it goes down all the way, the engine WILL self-destruct. An engine that is in self-destruct mode will loose its smoothness. Get it? Your engine is in self-destruct mode. If you try to limp it to the mazda place for the oil change, you might need an engine change instead. Use 5-20 oil. Now.

RTFM...read the friggin' manual on how to check oil level.

You're kidding, right? You drove your car for a "couple" of days with the low oil level light on? A car that is known to use oil by design? Very difficult to believe.

Click on the attachment.

No response back from the original poster yet... must be stranded along the side of the road by now with a destroyed rotary engine.

I just hit the 3K mile mark- I check the oil regularly and it still shows as full- I am surprised because I expected to have to put some in by now- is this normal? also, how often is the oil supposed to be changed with the rotary engine?

A couple of days?! Give your RX-8 to someone who deserves it.

You may want to carefully check the oil again. (The oil level is sometimes difficult to see on the OEM dipstick.) Was it over filled initially and you actually did use some oil? Or has the level been at the full mark for the entire 3K? If you have not used ANY oil in 3K miles, I would suspect some sort of problem that may require a trip to the dealer in an attempt to find out why. My advice would be to change the oil and keep a close check on the level for awhile. While you're at it, collect a sample of the old oil and send it off to have it analysed. Blackstone is one company that does that sort of thing. Check them out on line before you change the oil. They will send you a couple of collection bottles to return to them with your sample.

There are as many answers to the question of oil change interval as there are stars in the heavens. Opinions abound. I believe the owners manual indicates every 7K miles. Many advise 3K miles. And others have their own schedule. If you have any hint of gas contamination of the oil, you may want to change it even more frequently.

If you change it at 3K, chances are you will not need to add much if any between changes. That is, if your oil consumption is in the average range. However, you WILL use some and the level will drop. Like I said, keep a close watch on it.

The dealers all seem to have a tendency to overfill. Maybe they don't know what they are doing maybe they are trying to avoid issues like the thread starter.

If you didn't check your oil right at the beginning, you were probably overfilled.

Hey, I'm not one to call names, but ignorance is bliss until it costs you an engine. I am hoping this is a joke to see what kinds of responses they can get back with such an obviously ludicrous problem.

That's almost like saying "my heart keeps skipping beats, I'm short of breath, and if I try any physical activity my chest hurts like hell. It's been like that for a few days now. Think I should see a doctor?" LOL

People like this should not be allowed to operate automobiles let alone a fine car like the RX-8!

The responsibility of driving a car should incluude the responsibity to care for and maintain the car!

LOL!

Since full service gas stations are pretty much extinct, I bet the MINORITY of drivers ever check their oil. When I look around at the cars getting gas at the mega stations I rarely see any hoods up other than my 8. If there's a hood up it's on some junker that belched in amidst a cloud of smoke (no emissions testing here).

you know what's the sad truth. majority of 8 owner's don't know jack and will eventually turn their cars to POSs. if you don't know how to maintain a regular car in general, what makes you think you can handle the 8?? i'd like to see how many beat ass 8's appear in the coming years. so sad....

Come to think of it, I don't recall when I last saw anyone else checking their oil at a gas station. I usually check my every third fill-up.
