Interesting
wonder if the cars have some service history in common besides high mileage ... very low mpg ... multiple floodings ect.

Any update Omicron?

I just checked it out on Kelly and a 2004 Rx8 w/30000 miles on it and lets say -- just a Sports Package -- isnt even worth $20000 today in good condition (based on private party sales). I guess a 30000 mile Rx8 w/a 0 mile engine could be sold for a couplegrand more by using a little bargaining power.

Not necessarily as you'll have to explain the reason to have a new engine when the old one only had 30 some thousand miles... I can hear it now: "It broke already?" Mazda research? Is it a bad engine? And the majority of people still thinks the rotary is unreliable.

When I was shopping for a 3rd gen I stayed away from new or rebuilt engines and turbos because you never really know what happened. I bought the one I have with the original engine and less than 35k miles.

Why would you pay your dealers in another country to pull perfectly good engines, ship them back to Japan, and pay technicians to dissect the very engines they built? That's an awful lot of smoke if there isn't any fire. Mine has almost 24,000 on the clock now in only one year and all is well. ... isn't it? I would feel a lot better if my basic warranty wasn't going to run out some time next summer / fall when I kick over 36k.

Isn't your warranty 48 months or 48,000 miles? That what it is on my 2004.

Remember that episode of the Simpson's where this guy thought they said:

"The PTA is disbanding"

He then yelled and broken through a window...

That's about to be me if someone does not come up with better information, LOL. Frank Patrick thanks for the info but you left my jaw on the ground....

AND....AND....AND....what else did he say?

I bet it was just a yes (without detail) but I can't talk to you about it type of conversation, I hope all is well at Mazda and the new engine with MORE HP theory is the right one...lol

Someone hold me....LOL

I sure thought it was 36k, but I would like to be wrong. In any case, it's alarming that Mazda is spot checking be replacing whole engines.

Question Racing

I recall that BMW did a big number their build quality with the first generation M3 track racing cars that used crankshafts from bought back standard M3 engines with high milage. The real reason was not really the quality but that the high milage had removed all tensions etc in the old crankshafts and they could stress the engines a bit more compared to new crankshafts... Guess it is wishfull tinking, but could someting similar be valid for parts of the Renesis engine?

Cheers, Niclas

Mazda do research all over the world INCLUDING THE USA.
Nothing unusual about an engine swap program... these are complete engines and would be installed in a day.
Its called market research at the grass roots level...the owner!!
This is one way how the Japs (Mazda) improve their product.

I'm from Germany and they swapped my engine at 55.000km (34.000 miles). It was a complete engine and the new one runs great ! I think in germany the waste of the engine is much more than in the USA. My engine passed more than half of the distance with WOT on the autobahn.

I'll tell ya, if Mazda wants an engine to look at as an example of how reliable the Renesis is I'd gladly fork over my well-abused nitrous engine that still runs great. If they did a swap I would ask to be given a few days to port the replacment engine before it was installed.

Hey, Charles, I suggest in your case they should maybe throw in a driveshaft and a rear end! Actually I think they should put your car in a museum because it is truly a testament to the fact that the RX-8 is one hell of a well built auto. I used to be scared to hurt my precious by spinning the wheels and hard shifting but after spending a little time around you, I have a whole knew appreciation for what this car can handle and how durable this engine is. I think you should look into this as you are a perfect candidate, if it is legit!

I don't know how true this engine swap can be.... My RX8 has been at the dealer for 7 days now, major engine problems. The techs have called Mazda and ran a bunch of tests. Mazda corporate doesn't know what is wrong. I hope to get a new engine out of this. If this swap is true - my engine would be perfect. If they want to see how the RX8 engine is holding up - they can have mine. I just want my RX8 back.

It seems that the swapped engine have more power. The old engine had an topspeed of about 145(sometimes 150) and the new one 150, sometimes 155mph.
