Long crank time, not starting when warm

hey guys I'm new to the rx8 forums I drove my gfs rx8 for the past 6 months now I have decided to buy one but it has a problem, once its warm it wont start til it cools down a little? is this a easy fix? common problem? thanks for all the help guys!

we need some more info....year? Mileage? do you know if the coils/plugs have been changed recently?

Jon316G 07-03-2009 08:55 PM

If your car doesn't have the upgraded starter, I would suggest buying one.
Exactly the same problem I had.

2004, 109k it will run fine all day once started just when u shut it off it wont start for a bit, think it has orginal coils and plugs as well.... what do u mean upgraded starter!??! sorry new to rx8s

The starters were known to be weak in the '04 & '05 models.
Like any car, the starter is what turns the flywheel when you turn your key to 'start'.
Very easy to change out.

so just grab one out of a 06? but would that be the reason it wouldnt start after being warm it starts fine cold and runs fine its just when u turn it off then try and start it when its warm its weird

There was a service bulletin about a higher speed starter being available for the car. But, I suspect a new starter most likely won't solve your problem. Get a compression check. I suspect you have a engine problem. Unfortunately, the extended engine warranty runs out at 100K mi.

joshmoe 07-03-2009 09:38 PM

you think? I havent bought it yet.... the thing is it has no check engine lights run fine.. I drove it 8hrs one day with zero problems and shut it off and waited like 30min and it started fine.. anyone know what the compression is supposed to be on these engines and is it easy to do? I have a compression tester

alnielsen 07-03-2009 09:43 PM

I've had 3 engines replaced. This is how my first one died. I pulled into the gas station, filled the car up with gas and I couldn't restart it for 20 min. The car only had 13K miles on it at the time. At first the dealer couldn't reproduce the problem. Then the exhaust got louder and then the dealer replaced the engine.

joshmoe 07-03-2009 09:47 PM

wow thats scary makes me not even want to maybe buy it.... fuck well Its a 2004 black spotless I can get it for 5800 think I should pull the trigger

joshmoe 07-03-2009 09:51 PM

did they ever find out if it was actually blown or did they just replace it

That seems very cheap . Get the compression check done - if it is ok I'm sure the problem will not be hard to fix ...

alnielsen 07-03-2009 09:54 PM

They said there was low compression in both rotors. Mazda dealers don't open up the engines. So, I don't know exactly what the problem was.

Jon316G 07-03-2009 09:58 PM

All I'm saying is I had the same problem.
I could start fine when it was cold, but if I went to the gas station and tried to start it again, it would have a tough time starting.
But what do I know... I must be wrong... :dunno:

alnielsen 07-03-2009 10:01 PM

No one is saying your wrong. A starter is one of the possibilities. A compression check will rule out the engine being bad. Besides the starter, it could be coils & plugs.

joshmoe 07-03-2009 10:03 PM

I know how the guy got the car he bought it at a auction he is a small dealer and thought he would make some money on it but since it isnt starting when warm he is just trying to get out of it what he has into it. He doesnt know shit about rotary engines but they guy has been super upfront with me about the situation. how do you do the compression tests on these motors?

05rex8 07-03-2009 10:05 PM

i say it's low compression too
you will have to take it to the dealer unless you know someone with a rotary compression tester

joshmoe 07-03-2009 10:06 PM

fuck my life I dont have one

I agree with you... just got a little defensive when it appeared that something was being ruled-out without properly troubleshooting it.
Sometimes I just walk away from the forum because I feel that nobody is really helping someone to troubleshoot and narrow down their issue more.
People tend to say, "buy this, this, this and this" in hopes that one of those items will help.
I, like many, don't have the funds to just buy random parts hoping it'll fix the problem.

Sorry for getting defensive and the unnecessary comments... back to the thread :)

at 100k miles the fuel pump would also be an idea.

but at that mileage a compression test would have to happen.

beers

Razz1 07-04-2009 04:32 AM

Compression test has to be done at dealer as it has to b done at 250 RPM for correct reading.

04RX8man 07-04-2009 11:16 AM

yeah if you're thining about buying this thing I would tell the guy to pay for a compression test and look at the results before you buy...5800 is a good price IF the motor is good..if not then it's not a good deal enless ur looking to swap out a motor as soon as u get it!
