Key(/fob) coding didn't work!
I got a switchblade key from a Mazda MPV (which does NOT have a trunk release). I had a key cut for my RX-8. I popped the little pin out of the key shaft that holds it into the rotating part of the switchblade and I pulled out that key. I scribed the shape of that key onto my newly cut key and then cut it out and shaped it with a Dremel. I reinserted my new key and put the pin back in and the fit is perfect.
I followed the directions I found here: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-code-your-own-key-remote-43873/ Neither my new key, nor the key fob worked after either process. Any ideas as to why?? |
maybe because you;re using a minivan key for your sports car?? lol
What exactly didn't work? YOu have 2 keys and your new one right? |

What exactly didn't work? YOu have 2 keys and your new one right? Well, the key didn't start the car (the security light flashed at me when I tried), and the fob didn't unlock/lock the doors. I have 2 original keys, plus the valet (although I wasn't using it). Is there a modification to the process that I'm missing? |
MPV models do not have an anti-theft ignition system & the key does not contain a transponder. The MPV key is not compatible with the Miata or RX8. Sorry the MPV fob won't work on an RX-8.
