"Internal" air scoops?

After putting in a K&N typhoon, then having the nose off a couple times, I'm wondering if high-flow intakes are able to deliver full potential since the "Air Cleaner Insulator" still limits the intake area from the front to the little hole used by the stock airbox (plus maybe some extra leakage from inside the engine compartment, but how much can that really do....).

Has anyone else out there pondered/seen/fabricated a scoop (or even maybe a ram scoop) that would grab some air from the main grill where all of the flow is headed for the radiator/AC condenser?

I'm thinking that might be a way to approach a cold air intake (or at least get some extra cold air into a high-flow intake.

On a semi-related note. Does anyone know how the VFA valve works in the stock intake system? It appears to be actuated by a vacuum switch, but given the locations of the openings that it draws from, it's a little unclear what the intended purpose of the mechanism is.

Rotarygod did a post all about it. Run a search. I can't seem to find it. I thought it was sticky-ed. Oh, well.

As far as the rest, I'll have to take a look later today... well... hour and a half from now.
