im new to rotary engines
 

i just bought my RX-8 last weekend and have been asking around about things i need to know... so far i have heard that i need to rev the engine up to 3k then shut it off... i will have to change my apex seals at 50,000 miles... is any of this true?

If you did not fully warm up the engine you could do the 3k turn off so it does not flood. The engine has a 8yr 100K mile warranty so you are good til......how many miles do you have? Please read your manual, some people are unaware that the engine is OIL INJECTED and will need oil added occasionally.

you only change your seals of your engine gives out....other than that just bring your car up to temp so it doesnt flood ....or just rev it to 5krpm turn it off and keep your foot on the gas so it gets all the excess gas out

on average how soon will the apex seals need to be replaced tho? and other than the oil what kind of routine maintinance do i need to do?

again, you dont need to change your seals till your engine gives out, that depends how good you maintain your car, maintaining your car is simple, just like any other sports car, add oil every 1kmiles or soo do your oil change ever ~3k, change your airfilter when needed....there have been 8s so far getting up to 150k miles without a single rebuild and no problems....

Is your car new or used? Did you get an owner's manual and quick start guide with it? If you didn't, sign up in the owner's section at mazdausa.com and download them.

Apex seals in a rotary are pretty much like piston rings in a regular engine. There's no change interval, but sometimes things break. From posts in this forum, I get the strong impression that most engine failures are from side seals failing due to carbon buildup. Not apex seals. But anything can happen, and in this kind of forum you'll see a statistically warped picture of all kinds of things.

The 3K rev deal tends to be misunderstood.

The one thing that's true is that you should not turn off a rotary until you've driven far enough for it to have warmed up to normal operating temperature. That usually just takes a couple of miles. No need to rev then.

If you start it cold and aren't going to drive it, then you need to let it warm up by idling for a few minutes. In that case you do the 3K rev thing before shutting it off. You don't do the 3k rev with a cold engine instead of letting it warm up.

That's a good question but I don't think the information is available. The model is still fairly new and most engine failures are handled under warranty. Replacement of any seals requires the engine to be disassembled and then rebuilt. Mazda doesn't rebuild your engine at the shop. They are sent back to "the factory" and you get another, remanufactured engine as a replacement. So nobody gets an invoice saying "apex seals replaced", nor necessarily even know the actual cause an engine failure.

These apex seals can certainly last longer than 50,000 miles. You may be getting information from someone who remembers rotary engines of 30-40 years ago when the apex seals were made of different material and did have shorter service life.

As others have cited, rotary apeax seals serve much the same purpose as piston engine rings. [Many] years gone by we had to do "ring jobs", but materials technology and far tighter machining tolerances have almost eliminated that. Same for the rotary engine.
A small amount of oil is consumed in keeping the apex seals lubricated, so check the level every other/few gas fillups and change your oil at regular intervals.

As you can see, 51k miles, with 2 years of 9-12 psi of boost = immaculate engine. The trick is to take care of the fluids. Change the oil every 3k, and I do the coolant once a year. Premix and LC20 likely also helped me. I don't go overboard and dump 12 oz of premix in though.

if u got ur car used and there is no manual, u can find the manual on MazdaUSA.com site.

but I can tell you, use 75w90 GL4 oil for Gear box, and 75w90 GL5 oil for Rear Diff(LSD)

Make sure they're Full synthetic. They last longer.

Try to Avoid *GL4/5* oils.

Its not hard to find these gear oils, they sell it everywhere.

Have you checked the gearbox? Thats where my gear oil is.

I believe the sport and touring models, ones without traction control, don't have a limited slip diff. Could be wrong.

really...ok i tried... 75w90 GL4 oil for Gear box, and 75w90 GL5 oil for Rear Diff(LSD)..what is the brand for these oil?
where can i buy it..
