I want to change my Brake Fluid !!??
 

I cannot find a DIY on changing the Brake Fluid.

I know it should be pretty simple - But I can't find any good info.

Anyone???

get a speed bleeder.

then get superblue.

its pretty straightforward. put the fluid containing the superblue over your master cylinder. take a tire off, loosen the bolt on the caliper and then pump your brakes until blue comes out of the caliper. thats about it. do it for your clutch while you're at it.

And rule of thumb is state at the wheel farthest away from the Master cylinder...Passenger rear, then driver rear, then pass front and finally the driver front!....

oh and use dot 3 or 4 NOT dot 5!

I used a motive bleeder yesterday. I have an 06, no nipple at the MC. I just did the RR, LR, RF and LF. I actually screwed up and let my reservoir went dry. I had to go redo everything to get the huge bubble out. Now the pedal is firm as hell

OK OK OK Thanks guys ... now we're getting somewhere.

Step 1: Put my new fluid over the master cylinder .... ummm how???
Just sit it on top ;)
-Do I need some kind of special equipment for this???

Step 2: loosen the Right rear caliper and pump until new fluid is present.

(this is where the blue fluid will come in handy - So far I've bought Valvoline synthetic DOT 3&4--possibly the same color?)

Step 3,4,5: Tighten that one up - and the repeat w/ the Drivers rear/ Pass. front , the Drivers front.

Ohh- I plan on doing this along w/ changing my pads. - So I suppose I want to change the pads 1st - then bleed.

Here is what you will need

- DOT 4 Brake Fluid --- 1 quart should be enough but if you want you can go with 2.
- 10 mm and 8 mm wrench --- Or a reversible Ratchet. dont try to use a socket.
- a Clear plastic tube to go on your bleeder screw --- You can get this at home depot/lowes/whatever for maybe like 1-2 bux for 10 feet.
- an empty bottle to hold the "old" fluid (so it wont spill everywhere)

- Jack 4 corners of your car up, USE JACKSTAND TO SUPPORT THE CAR!
- Take all 4 wheels off.
- Locate the bleeder screw.
- you SHOULD bleed the closest one to the Master Cylinder first. So the order "SHOULD" be FL - Clutch Slave - FR - RL - RR.
- Have a friend/whoever to "step on" the brakes for you. give him orders like "GO" and "HOLD" and "LET GO"
- Front use 8mm wrench, Rear use 10 mm, Clutch use 10mm.
- put the clear tube into the bleed screw, put the other end to an empty bottle, Open the bleed screw, tell your buddy in the car to step on the brake/clutch(depends on where you bleeding) 3 times then HOLD it down. and when he say "HOLD" close your bleed screw right away OR when you feel that he is about to finish his 3rd "pump" close the bleed screw on your own before he says "HOLD". After the bleed screw is closed, do it again.
- Remember that you have to add fluid after every 10 pumps. do NOT let the fluid level drop below the "LOW" mark. or else you have to start all over again.
- Also notice for the clutch, the clutch bracket might not bounce back up on its own like the brake does. if it doesn't, tell your buddy to lift it back up with his/her hand then pump it again.
- For the clutch you might need a "shorter" wrench. cuz the space down there is really fuxking tight.

If you want to change pads, change the pads first, then you bleed.

Changing pads are really easy.

Just fyi. I used an air bleeder and it made my pedal feel like shit.
Best way to bleed brakes, is with two people. Period.


Air bleeders are nice when you replace a caliper, or lines. It helps get initial huge air pockets out of the system.
The FSM also recommends bleeding the master cylinder.

Use speed bleeders. They are cheap and easy to install.

but with speed bleeders you do not have to worry about the bleed screw at all.
Loosen 1/4 turn, pump the pedal repeatedly till the fluid changes, close the screw, move on.

With two people: one on fluid duty and one on pedal duty: the speed bleeders make the job super simple.
Make sure your buddy watches the fluid level

You could do this by yourself but you have to top up the fluid which makes the job take longer.

There is really no need to jack the car up.... I bled mine solo just fine with a MightyVac kit. Just reach in, loosen bleeder, attach vacuum pump, suck fluid out. After every 4ozs readd fluid to the reservoir. Takes like 5-10mins to flush brakes on an 8.

Rears you can just reach through the rim, for the fronts just turn the tire if you can't reach.

Thats how I did mine, turned out good too. Brakes feel so much better, the stuff that came out looked pink.... not sure what was up with that....

you should not be doing it if you need a DIY for a brake fluid change..get a more inclined friend to help you..
